Educator Professional Development

Overview

Music educators may join us for a unique professional development opportunity as we host our annual high school summer camp. Study with the faculty of the Lionel Hampton School of Music while working alongside talented high school and middle school students from around the country. The fun and intense week of camp provides the perfect opportunity to improve your pedagogy for all instruments and voice types across multiple styles.

• Three-Credits concurrent with summer camp dates

Sample Daily Schedule

• 8-9 a.m.
  • Warm-ups and master classes with LHSOM faculty on secondary instruments.
    • You may choose different instruments each day.
• 9-10:30 a.m.
  • Large Ensemble #1 rehearsal OR Music Education seminar
• 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Roundtable discussion on Music Ed topic of the day
• 11 a.m. to noon
  • In-service chamber group rehearsal #1 - performance opportunity for participants on their main instrument/vocal part
• 1-2:30 p.m.
  • Large Ensemble #2 rehearsal OR Music Education seminar
• 2:30-3 p.m.
  • Open roundtable discussion - instructors will solicit topics from participants when registering for the course
• 3-4 p.m.
  • Music Education elective lectures/activities
• 4-5 p.m. 
  • In-service chamber group rehearsal #2

Evening activities include LHSOM faculty performances, student performances, and workshops.

Goals

Workshop participants will:

1. Gain knowledge of and experience with instruments/vocal parts that are not their personal area of focus and expertise.
2. Be involved in lectures and discussions on current topics in music education, including: assessment and evaluation, student engagement, various approaches to, and theories in, music education, educational policy and legislation, and advocacy.
3. Be an active observer of the ensemble(s) of your choice, gaining valuable feedback from the LHSOM faculty directors.

Objectives

Participants will: 

1. Improve their ability to evaluate problems with their non-primary instruments/voices with the assistance of the LHSOM faculty. 
2. Gain knowledge in the use of student assessment and evaluation and in the use of engaging strategies.
3. Gain knowledge of the Orff Schulwerk, Kodaly, and Dalcroze approaches to music education, and will be able to apply the approaches to their own unique classroom settings.
4. Gain knowledge of current educational legislation, including ESSA and how this may or may not affect their personal teaching situations.
5. Create advocacy strategies for music education with an eye toward administration, parents, and communities.
6. Have the opportunity to review and improve their own technique and musicianship on their primary instrument or vocal part.
7. Have the opportunity to explore and review literature/repertoire for their own school ensembles or courses.
8. Gain experience in conducting ensembles under the guidance of the LHSOM faculty.

Course Requirements

Active participation in all required sessions. Final written reflection (2-4 pages) required on what the participants have learned throughout the course that they can apply to their unique teaching situation and how they have grown personally as a musician. Typed reflections would be sent to Dr. Lori Conlon Khan (lorick@uidaho.edu) following completion of the week.
