Hashtags and More

Should you use hashtags? When and how are they most effective? Which hashtags should you always include? We've got you. Hashtags are a great way to help potential followers find you. Using them extends your reach and be discovered — but be careful, they have to be used strategically in order to help you. Using them for the sake of adding a hashtag reduces their meaning and your credibility in the marketplace.

Creating a Hashtag

Before you create a hashtag, make sure one is really necessary. Do you need to start a brand new conversation or would it be better to join an existing conversation? If so, which ones are people using and in which way? You should always add the #UIdaho hashtag.

Promoting a Hashtag

The best way to promote a hashtag is to use it. When you actively use your hashtag, you keep it in front of audience members who may adopt it as well. Hashtags are a great way to build a community story.

From there, you should monitor your hashtag and interact with audience members who use it. Notice the hashtag use, and reward it with a repost/retweet, comment or reaction.

Using U of I Hashtags
