Honors Program Curriculum

  • Attend an Honors new student orientation session in your first fall semester.
  • Complete 21 honors credits and have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 at graduation. May use up to 2 Honors Program Course Contracts for no more than 6 Honors credits towards the required 21 Honors credits.
  • Complete 1 approved Engaged Learning Experience. The approved list of engaged learning experiences can be found on our webpage.
  • Choose to complete either an Honors Thesis or an Honors Portfolio. Students will enroll in HON INTR 454 for 3 Honors credits (repeatable) and HON INTR 440 for 1 Honors credit (non-repeatable) for at least 4 Honors credits altogether towards the 21-Honors credit requirement.
  • Submit an internal program completion form before graduation.

How to prepare for academic advising:

  • Write and submit an academic manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Publish an academic article in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Present research, scholarship or creative activity at the University of Idaho, a regional or national Honors conference, or a regional, national or international academic conference.
  • Apply for an undergraduate research grant.
  • Participate in an REU or other formalized summer undergraduate research opportunity.
  • Perform or exhibit a creative activity that is not part of a university class or group.
  • Serve as a University of Idaho teaching or research assistant (with a contract).
  • Participate in an education abroad opportunity.
  • Apply for a nationally competitive or distinguished scholarship. View a list of scholarships.
  • Serve on the board of the University Honors Program student club for two consecutive semesters.
  • Serve as a University Honors Program student ambassador or peer mentor for two consecutive semesters.
  • Edit the University Honors Program student-led magazine The Looking Glass for two consecutive semesters.

Honors Program students may use a limited number of course contracts towards program requirements. Follow the step-by-step guide to ensure that your course contract work can be accepted for Honors credits.

Honors Program students will choose to complete either an Honors Thesis or an Honors Portfolio by enrolling in HON INTR 454 for 3 Honors credits (repeatable) and HON INTR 440 for 1 Honors credit (non-repeatable) during their final year.
