Colleen Kulesza

Colleen-KuleszaWhile I was technically born on Cape Cod, I am a western women through and through. I grew up in Colorado and feel at home among the mountains and prairies of the west. I have dabbled in farming on the small scale and currently miss having chickens in the yard. I am very outdoorsy and love to hike, backpack, camp, fish, hunt, go birding, and lie on my back watching the clouds roll by. I am an avid reader and crafter as well so when the weather is too bad for outdoor fun, I can be found at a café reading or crocheting with friends.

I earned my BS in wildlife biology at Colorado State University in the early 90s and spent 15 years as an environmental educator in California, Louisiana and Illinois. While in the suburbs of Chicago I was the Director of Education at a private non-profit environmental organization and earned my MS Ed in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Outdoor Education. In 2006 I realized that I wanted to pursue a doctorate degree and chose the University of Idaho which I had learned about as an undergrad and always saw as my chosen school for graduate work. I hope to graduate in December of 2013 with a PhD in Natural Resources. My research involves interviewing women who hunt and analyzing images of women in hunting magazines to determine what it is like to be a woman doing a male dominated activity.

I have always been a feminist and social activist in addition to my love of nature and teaching. I never realized I could make a career out of working for equality for women until I got to the U of I. While doing my research and delving deeper into feminist and gender theories, I realized this would be my next fulfilling adventure. I was an intern at the women’s center last year and absolutely fell in love with the work and the people. It was so marvelous to be around other people who saw the need to support women and provide fun and educational experiences for all the students, faculty and staff on campus. I am now the interim Program Coordinator for the Women’s Center and am thrilled to be able to plan and facilitate a wide spectrum of programs that provide positive, affirming experiences for so many.
