Statistical Science: High Demand Interdisciplinary Careers
The field of Statistics addresses how to collect, analyze, and interpret information, typically in the form of numerical data. Statisticians are in demand in many fields including government, health and medicine, business, environmental studies and in other sciences. Careers in Statistics are regularly ranked among the top careers due to their salaries, projected job growth, and the variety of interesting work environments.
The Statistical Science Department at the University of Idaho reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Statistics in having faculty with diverse research interests. Faculty interests include research in the fields of agriculture, bioinformatics, business, ecology, epidemiology, genetics, mathematics, psychology, and wildlife studies.
Undergraduate courses offered by the Statistical Science Department are taken by students throughout the university. For example, our introductory course, Stat 251, is taken by more than 1,200 students each year. Our Statistical Assistance Center provides drop-in help to students enrolled in our largest undergraduate courses (Stat 251, Stat 301, and Stat 431).
At the graduate level, our courses serve not only our own students, but play a vital role in training graduate students in many other programs. Our Statistical Consulting Center provides assistance to faculty, staff, and student researchers. Our faculty and graduate students in the consulting center have several hundred contacts per year and help fuel the university’s research engine.
We offer a minor in Statistics at the undergraduate level, and at the graduate level we offer a Master’s degree as well as Certificates of Completion in Statistical Science and in Enterprise-wide Process & Performance Excellence. The Master’s degree in Statistical Science has three options: a thesis option, a consulting option, and an internship option, allowing students to customize their programs to fit their career objectives. We also have a very successful online program facilitated by Engineering Outreach, offering both thesis and internship options for opportunities to students who live at a distance. An advantage of our graduate program is that our faculty conduct state-of-the-art research, but are still highly accessible to students.
