Today’s grand challenges and next generation innovations require an integrated and diverse range of expertise. For modern materials, metal contamination is a critical issue as many items (from medicines to carbon nanotubes) contain trace metal impurities (TMIs) from late stage transition metal catalysis reactions causing toxicity or undesired effects. Current technologies utilize harsh conditions for removal of TMIs, limiting the functionalities of the materials or methods for further development.
Our team has been working collaboratively with chemical engineers to find a mild method for purification utilizing a coordinative ligand: the arylazothioformamide (ATF) ligand. The ATF ligand has been shown to dissolve solid metals! These unique complexes could prove useful in detection, separation, and sequestration of valuable and/or toxic metals and is environmentally responsible and economically pragmatic.
Secondly, we have undertaken an interest in developing a cross-disciplinary model for laboratory coursework. Working collaboratively with microbiology, biology, and chemical engineering labs we have developed new protocols for research-based laboratory instruction that require students to connect across campus and value each other’s training and expertise. This immersive research experience in the first-year curriculum gives students first-hand knowledge of independent research projects and teaches critical thinking and problem solving – key skills for our workforce.
