From the College of Science

We welcome you to the College of Science. If you are an alumnus or friend of the college, you are in good company. We have a legacy of producing leaders in academia, business and industry.

If you are a high school student thinking about a major, consider this: a degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) earns you 26 percent more than a non-STEM degree. Also, STEM occupations are projected to continue growing faster than others.

As you think about where to get a STEM degree, consider this: The College of Science at the University of Idaho offers world-class opportunities for undergraduates to get involved in research. We’re a national research university with a faculty of outstanding research scientists – but we’re not too big. At Idaho, you will get to know your professors and have an opportunity to work alongside them. That research experience can be the difference that really sets you apart when you enter the job market.

If you are considering graduate studies in a science field, we hope you’ll look into our distinct interdisciplinary options and nationally ranked programs. For example, we have an interdisciplinary group of biologists, mathematicians, and statisticians conducting state of the art genomics research. We have chemists, physicists and biologists developing nanowires as sensors for explosives and as new approaches for drug delivery. We have geographers studying the potential effects of climate variability on regional water supplies. We have geologists investigating an array of geologic hazards such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. We think you’ll find the array of options for study at Idaho to be exciting.

For the latest on what is happening in the college, check out the College of Science on Facebook. We hope to see you on campus sometime soon.
