On Thursday, April 4, 2019 the University of Idaho will welcome Dr. Mark Silver, Senior Program Officer in the Research Division of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), who will conduct a free workshop on applying for NEH grants. Anyone interested in learning about NEH funding opportunities and application strategies is welcome to attend this event.

This free workshop is open to the public. Registration is required.

About the Event

In the first half of the workshop, Dr. Silver will provide an overview of NEH funding opportunities and offer tips for writing competitive Fellowships proposals. Those interested in other NEH programs will find that much of the advice applies. In the second half of the workshop, Dr. Silver will run a mock NEH  review panel, where actual proposals will be discussed and evaluated following NEH’s procedures, in order to demonstrate how proposals are reviewed for NEH funding.

Dr. Silver will also be available to meet individually with prospective NEH applicants to discuss their proposed projects and offer advice. While it is best to participate in the full workshop, you may schedule an individual appointment even if you cannot attend the main session. Twenty minute appointments with Dr. Silver are available on Thursday, April 4 from 2-5 p.m. at the University of Idaho Bruce Pitman Center, Chiefs Room, and on Friday, April 5, 2019, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the University Best Western Plus, Regents Room (1516 Pullman Rd, Moscow).

Space is limited for these one-on-one sessions, and these meetings are expected to fill quickly. To request an individual appointment, please register and indicate the time slot for your individual appointment. Individual appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that individuals requesting an appointment must prepare a one-page single-spaced statement of their proposed project. When you register for an appointment, you will receive a follow-up email with project statement guidelines and submission procedures.

We will not be recording or streaming this workshop for those who cannot attend in person. Please contact the NEH Division of Research Programs at research@neh.gov if you are interested in learning about other scheduled workshops around the country.

Dr. Mark Silver is the Asia specialist on the staff of NEH’s Division of Research Programs. He works primarily in the Division’s programs for individuals, including Fellowships, Summer Stipends, Awards for Faculty, and the Public Scholar Program (for which he is the team leader). He has also chaired review panels in the Collaborative Research and Scholarly Editions and Translations programs. Before joining the Endowment, he taught Japanese language and literature at Middlebury College, Connecticut College and Colgate University. He has published reviews, translations and peer-reviewed articles in the field of Japanese Studies, as well as a book titled "Purloined Letters: Cultural Borrowing and Japanese Crime Literature, 1868-1937" (Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2008). He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Literatures from Yale University.
