U of I’s Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning Selects Four Fellows

MOSCOW, Idaho — May 27, 2021 — Two University of Idaho students and two faculty members have been selected as fellows for the Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning (CDIL), a digital humanities center directed by librarians at the University of Idaho Library that provides digital opportunities to advance research and teaching.

Fellows work with CDIL staff on digital projects to improve their data analysis, web development and project management skills. Student fellowships occur this summer; faculty fellowships begin this summer and continue into the fall.

The winners include:

• Sarah Campbell, assistant professor, Theatre Arts Department, CDIL Digital Scholarship Fellow ($4,000): Campbell will work with CDIL to develop a new Digital Dramaturgy tool that allows students and researchers to annotate and interpret plays using web-based publishing and data analysis tools. Campbell was the CDIL Development Fellow last year, and as part of that fellowship, she collaborated with CDIL to pilot this tool in her Spring 2021 Dramaturgical Arts class. She will be working in the summer and fall to build on the initial pilot and envision expanded features and documentation to enable other dramaturgs and students here and across the country to use the tool.
• Jennifer Ladino, professor, English Department, CDIL Faculty Development Fellowship ($1,500): Ladino will receive a series of training sessions with CDIL staff to investigate ways to improve her knowledge and capacity with Geographic Information System (GIS) and web-based tools to help support her work as co-director of the Confluence Lab, which is administering several grants requiring digital/GIS applications. The CDIL and the Confluence Lab collaborated to support last year’s CDIL graduate student fellowship, Storying Extinction. As part of her fellowship, Ladino will also serve as faculty advisor for the upcoming Idaho Fire Tower Deep Mapping project pilot, which is supported by the library and directed by former CDIL graduate student workers and fellows.
• Cady Favazzo, English Department, MFA ’22, College of Graduate Studies/CDIL Graduate Student Fellowship ($3,900): Favazzo will work with CDIL staff to extend her work to revitalize the Vandal Poem of the Day Project (VPOD). As this year’s web editor for the University of Idaho’s literary journal, “Fugue,” Favazzo approached poetry presses across the country to participate in the program. Prominent press Four Way Books agreed to participate for the 2021 calendar year, and Favazzo directed the project to code and post the poems to VPOD. Favazzo will work this summer to further populate the project with poems for future publication and investigate new platforms for the project using static web approaches developed by CDIL.
• Liam Marchant, undergraduate, Lionel Hampton School of Music, Office of Undergraduate Research/CDIL Undergraduate Student Fellowship ($2,500): Marchant, a Moscow resident, will work with CDIL as well as Barry Bilderback of U of I and Habib Iddrisu of the University of Oregon to develop a digital collection showcasing and preserving various aspects of Ghana’s traditional dance and music. Some collection material will come from Iddrisu’s cultural preservation work with the Agoo-Bi Nii Cultural Center, while other material will be drawn from Marchant’s research with Bilderback. Marchant will create detailed metadata for collection material which will be used to create visualizations highlighting connections between artists, regions and styles of playing. Marchant will summarize and contextualize the collection through engaging and educational thought pieces that coexist alongside collection items on the digital collection site.
