Fraudulent Purchasing Claims Disguised as Official U of I Business
April 01, 2021
MOSCOW, Idaho — April 1, 2021 — The University of Idaho has recently become aware of an internet scam involving someone improperly impersonating the university’s purchasing department in an effort to purchase large quantities of various types of goods. Emails have been sent to numerous vendors from email addresses ending in “unidaho-edu.com,” which is NOT a University of Idaho email address. The emails use names of people associated with the university, but who are not purchasing department employees. These emails do not represent U of I, or its associates, in any manner.
U of I encourages anyone who receives one of these emails to report the matter to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov. Further, please contact email@example.com if you are aware of, or have been contacted by, anyone using the domain “unidaho-edu.com.” You should also report this to your email provider so that future messages can be blocked.
U of I does not use or have any control of the “unidaho-edu.com” internet domain. The university is pursuing the takedown of the domain address and is providing this notice to the public in an effort to inform you of the scam.
All legitimate U of I emails will come from an email address from the university’s official domain, “uidaho.edu.” Further, anyone can confirm the identity of a U of I employee by using the university’s employee directory at directory.uidaho.edu and confirming the contact information in the email with the information on the official University of Idaho website. You may also contact the University of Idaho’s Purchasing Department at firstname.lastname@example.org or 208-885-6116 to verify purchases coming from the university.
