COVID-19 Expert and CIDRAP Director to Keynote the 2021 Borah Symposium

MOSCOW, Idaho — Oct. 6, 2021 — This year’s Borah Symposium, “Pandemics: Looking Back, Facing Forward,” is scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 11-13, at the University of Idaho and online, and features speakers and panel discussions addressing community and global health.

The three-day event will explore how pandemics may change culture, intensify inequalities, promote peace, divide nations, exacerbate international tensions or impact climate change border issues.

A virtual panel discussion at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, will be moderated by award-winning author, journalist and speaker John-Manuel Andriote. Panelists include Jamie Aten, founder and executive director of the Humanitarian Disaster Institute; Jenny Ottenhoff, senior policy director, Global Health and Education at ONE; and Isaiah Wilson, III, former director of the Strategic Studies Institute and the U.S. Army War College Press. Watch “Social Change and the 14th Century Plague Pandemic,” by Scott Minnich, professor of microbiology and the associate director for the NIH-funded Idaho INBRE Program at U of I at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, online.

The Borah Symposium Keynote, “Community Health and Economic Prosperity,” by Michael Osterholm, epidemiologist, COVID-19 expert and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Bruce Pitman Center’s International Ballroom.

Its annual symposia bring together world leaders, diplomats, scholars and activists to discuss current problems facing our global community and to offer solutions. The three-day symposium will explore how pandemics may change culture, intensify inequalities, promote peace, divide nations, exacerbate international tensions or impact climate change border issues.
