Student Media Students Earn SPJ Honors

Two reporters at The Argonaut student newspaper, senior journalism major Angela Palermo and first-year journalism major Cody Roberts, won first place in the Breaking News category for their coverage of anti-mask protests in Moscow in the Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ) 2021 Mark of Excellence Region 10 Awards. Their story will compete for the national award in that category. Several other Student Media students and publications were also named finalists, placing them among the top in the region.
The Argonaut was named a finalist for Best All-Around Student Newspaper for work completed in 2020 under the leadership of editor-in-chief Brianna Finnegan, a junior journalism major. Blot magazine was named a finalist for Best Student Magazine for work completed in 2020 under the leadership of editors-in-chief Lindsay Trombly (journalism ’20) and Cody Allred (public relations ’20). Palermo was also a finalist in the Radio News Reporting category for her coverage of COVID-19 on KUOI FM. Other finalists include Riley Haun (journalism ’20) in the Non-Fiction Magazine Article and COVID-19 Coverage categories for her article on U of I student experiences during the Spanish Flu pandemic for Blot magazine. The Argonaut editorial staff was a finalist in the Editorial Writing category. See a full list of winners and finalists.
