Computer Science Doctoral Student Publishes in Patterns Journal

January 21, 2021

College of Engineering doctoral student Rayan Alshamrani has published an article titled “Model-Driven Decision-Making in Multiple Sclerosis Research: Existing Works and Latest Trends” in Patterns, one of Cell Press’ more than 50 scientific journals. Alshamrani’s article focuses on multiple sclerosis (MS), a disorder that strikes the body’s central nervous system. Due to the complexity of this disease, healthcare sectors are increasingly in need of shared clinical decision-making tools to provide practitioners with insightful knowledge and information.

In the article, Alshamrani and co-authors, including Department of Computer Science Assistant Professor Marshall Ma, review the use of state-of-the-art decision support systems (DSSs), software-based systems that organize useful information from data from multiple sources to solve problems and make decisions, toward MS research. Their research suggests using model-driven DSSs, computer-based, mathematically simulated knowledge representation, simplifies and enhances the decision-making process.

“Adopting DSSs in MS research moves us closer to diagnosis and treatment automation for this widespread neurological condition,” said Alshamrani. “This research helps data scientists enrich new automated decision-making technologies and helps the MS medical community find useful information about the most recent technologies that could help them in their daily clinical practices.”
