Leda Kobziar Publishes on Wildland Fire Smoke

January 11, 2021

An article on wildland fire smoke research by Leda Kobziar, a University of Idaho associate professor of wildland fire science in the College of Natural Resources, was recently published in Science, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The article recommends that fire, infectious disease, epidemiology and air quality scientists should unite to determine the infectious potential of wildfire smoke. Recently, research by Kobziar and others has shown that viable bacteria and fungi are emitted into the atmosphere during wildland fires, and the microbes comprise a significant portion of smoke particulate matter. Kobziar’s work shows that trillions of microbes living on — and in — plants and soils can disperse around the planet through smoke, potentially spreading pathogens or toxins or affecting the biological functioning of the places they land.
