U of I Receives Award to Improve Scholarly Literature Databases
July 31, 2020
The University of Idaho Library received a $99,969 award from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for FY20. Seventy grants totaling $18,256,177 were awarded by IMLS to support libraries across the country. The awarded dollars are intended to be used to apply new technologies in data search, storage, retrieval and cross-referencing to make scientific data easier to find and reuse. U of I will use the award to plan for a web application and service to improve search and discovery of agricultural and environmental information.
The U of I team — with partners at Kansas State University — will investigate the integration of two existing agricultural databases as a demonstration of how to broadly improve existing scholarly literature databases by piloting how metadata fields for location-based searches can be applied to article databases. These results could enhance findability, article classification, geo-referencing and further integration between systems.
This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services LG-246411-OLS-20. The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums. They advance, support and empower America’s museums, libraries and related organizations through grantmaking, research and policy development.
