Adam Sowards’s New Book on Environmental Activism is Now Available

April 16, 2020

In 1966, tension mounted in Washington state between local and national conservationists and Kennecott Copper Corporation, which planned to mine Miners Ridge for its vast quantities of copper Adam Sowards, professor of history in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences, deftly tells the story of this historic struggle that ended up defining the possibilities and limits of the Wilderness Act in his new book, “An Open Pit Visible from the Moon: The Wilderness Act and the Fight to Protect Miners Ridge and the Public Interest,” published by University of Oklahoma Press. While no law or court ruling could keep Kennecott from mining copper, the pit was never dug. Identifying the contingent factors and forces that converged and coalesced in this case, Sowards’s narrative recalls a critical moment in the struggle over the nation’s wild places, even as it puts the unpredictability of history on full display
