March 11, 2020

Kimia Kajbaf and Amit Yadav, two CALS Ph.D. candidates conducting research at U of I’s Aquaculture Research Institute (ARI) under Assistant Professor Vikas Kumar, received student travel awards for last month’s Aquaculture 2020 conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The awards, distributed through the U.S. Aquaculture Society (USAS) Student Travel Program, included free registration to the Aquaculture 2020 conference, as well as monetary awards to cover their travel costs.

Yadav received a $1,500 check from Tyson Foods for his research on the use of Vitamin C to mitigate iron toxicity in catfish. Kajbaf received $1,000 from the Soy Aquaculture Alliance and U.S. Aquaculture Society for exploring criteria for selecting rainbow trout lines that enhance the efficiency of soybean meal utilization in their diets. Both received the monetary awards and certificates at the Aquaculture 2020 meeting’s student reception on Feb. 11.
