Rangeland Center Members Contribute to Translational Animal Science

January 21, 2020

Six Rangeland Center members recently published papers in a journal dedicated to animal science. The Translational Animal Science’s December 2019 issue featured University of Idaho faculty and graduate students from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Natural Resources and U of I Extension. Authors in the Rangeland Center included Jim Sprinkle, beef extension specialist; Tracey Johnson, assistant professor of wildlife habitat ecology in rangeland systems and director of research at Rinker Rock Creek Ranch; Melinda Ellison, assistant professor of range livestock research; Carmen Willmore, Extension educator for Lincoln County; Joseph Sagers, Extension educator for Jefferson County; and John Hall, superintendent of the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center and cattle management lead at Rinker Rock Creek Ranch.

The publications covered diverse topics such as biological drivers of grazing preferences in sheep, wet meadow vegetation response to varying levels of grazing at U of I’s Rinker Rock Creek Ranch, examination of a marker for beef cattle efficiency on rangeland and a comparison of animal condition between cattle with or without protein supplementation on two different late-season grazing systems – one located at Rinker Rock Creek Ranch and the other at the Nancy M. Cummings Research, Extension and Education Center.
