Engineering students Mark Currier, Jadzia Graves, Vanessa Beasley and Saheed Adisa accept their award for honorable mention during the 2019 Bladesmithing Competition hosted by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

An interdisciplinary University of Idaho College of Engineering team won honorable mention in the 2019 Bladesmithing Competition hosted by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. The winning team includes a mix of materials science and engineering and chemical engineering students Saheed Adisa, Mohammad Alqahtani, Vanessa Beasley, Mark Currier, Brandon Day, Jadzia Graves, Arnab Kundu, Jackson Mitchell, Paul Reibe and Anumat Sittiho.

The team's 11 1/2-inch blade took about 30 hours of metal work and craftsmanship on the blade handle and presentation box.

The blade was modeled after the famed Bowie Knife, a large sheath knife known for its definitive crossguard, the horizontal bar of metal between the blade and handle, and clipped blade point.

"For materials science and engineering, it is about correlating the material properties and microstructure," said engineering graduate student and team member Brandon Day. "Additionally, material characterizations allow us to understand the structure to design and modify the blade. This results in obtaining ideal hardness for maintaining an edge and toughness to prevent it from shattering during use."
