Two CLASS Faculty Earn Inaugural Idaho GEM Innovative Educator Awards

September 30, 2019

Diane Carter and Barbara Kirchmeier — both faculty in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences — were recognized for their outstanding teaching as recipients of the inaugural Idaho GEM Innovative Educator Awards, presented by the Idaho State Board of Education's General Education Committee and Capital Educators Credit Union. The pair were announced as the top statewide educators in a specific category at the annual Idaho State Board of Education General Education Summit on Sept. 19. Carter was honored in the oral communication category and Kirchmeier was honored for written communication.

Carter, a senior instructor of communication in the Department of Psychology and Communication Studies, currently teaches classes in public speaking, interpersonal communication and conflict management. She began her career at the U of I in 2009 as an adjunct faculty member and has been a senior instructor since 2012.

Kirchmeier, a senior instructor in the Department of English, oversees the first-year composition program and teaches courses in professional writing, rhetoric and composition. She has been a member of the U of I faculty since 2009 and earned the Alumni Award for Excellence as a mentor in 2018.
