Shelley McGuire Appointed Director for School of Family and Consumer Sciences

Michelle (Shelley) McGuire has been appointed the new director for the Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences effective Aug. 13, 2018.
McGuire joins the University of Idaho and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences from the Washington State University School of Biological Sciences, where she worked as a professor in lactation physiology and nutrition
Her research focuses primarily on understanding how maternal diet and nutritional status influence human milk composition and maternal/infant health during breastfeeding.
More recently, McGuire has been working with her colleagues at U of I to study the presence and variability of bacteria in human milk and the resulting impacts on infant health in the U.S. and around the globe. As a seasoned science writer, McGuire is also committed to bettering human health through the provision of user-friendly, high-quality, evidence-based nutrition information to the press and public.
McGuire received her Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Illinois in 1986, Master of Science in nutritional sciences from the University of Illinois in 1988 and doctorate in human nutrition from Cornell University in 1994.
