Announcing the Student Success Initiative

January 13, 2017

Provost & Executive Vice President John Wiencek is pleased to announce that this spring, the University of Idaho will launch a new Student Success Initiative, to be led by Vice Provost of Strategic Enrollment Management Dean Kahler.

This campuswide initiative aims to bring together offices that support students together in a Vandal Success Center. The center will offer a convenient, centralized location for our students to access the resources they need to be successful at UI.

The Vandal Success Center is being organized with the support from the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, Enrollment Management, Academic Initiatives and ASUI. Goals of the center include increasing retention and reducing the time it takes for students to graduate.

This semester, Kahler will form a committee to help shape and articulate the vision of the Student Success Initiative, with a goal of launching the center in fall 2017.

The committee is charged with accomplishing the following:

  • Develop a mission statement for the Vandal Success Center.

  • Develop a three-year vision for the Vandal Success Center.

  • Develop three to five goals that will help the center achieve its vision, along with metrics.

  • Define a synergistic working relationship with the Library, Student Affairs and college-based student success activities and offices.

  • Define student support functions that might be best offered through the center (e.g. first year advising for undeclared majors, tutoring, math or writing support etc.).

Broad university input will be vital to the success of this initiative, and I encourage all UI employees and students to participate in upcoming open forums and provide feedback.

Our No. 1 goal at this university is to provide our students with an education that launches them into a successful future. I am excited to see the results of the Student Success Initiative and how the Vandal Success Center will help all of us reach our goals.

Dean Kahler
