Bio
As a first generation student and member of the Latin community, going to law school was a huge step. Upon graduating from Boise State University in 2019 with a degree in Criminal Justice, I took one year off before applying to law school. During that time frame I took a competitive position as a paralegal for the Canyon County Public Defender’s Office in Caldwell, Idaho. There I was exposed to an amazing legal environment where I was able to work on a variety of cases and assist members of the community. Law school was always a goal for me, but thankfully, the networking opportunities I received from that job pushed me to make it happen.
What advice would you offer to incoming 1L law students?
The first year of law school is a whirlwind of emotions! Do not fret, as this is the case with most students. I definitely thought law school was going to be intimidating and impossible. However, I was able to find my niche. I utilized the advice of the professors and staff. It was extremely beneficial to meet with Professor Wellman, who teaches Academic Success, because I was able to create goals toward overall improvement in my life (not just academics). I realized that it is important to let yourself relax and that you do not need to sacrifice your mental health for law school. My mentor is Professor Newton, who is also an extremely helpful resource for any student, at any time, and for any reason. If you are interested in Criminal Law, I strongly encourage you to chat with him at some point during 1L year.
During my first year, I became a member of the Latino/a Law Caucus, Criminal Law Society, and took interest in the Agricultural Law Society. I am going into my second year as the Secretary for both Latino/a Law Caucus and Criminal Law Society. I feel that it is super important to keep an open mind and seek out activities and clubs that interest you. The learning opportunities are endless and there are opportunities to showcase your leadership abilities as well.
