December 2018 - First Monday
Dear Alumni and Friends,
It is difficult to believe that it is already December and the end of the fall semester. Students have begun their exams and are anticipating the upcoming break to rest and renew before starting with new vigor in the New Year. I have enjoyed my first semester as dean and continue to be impressed with the level of engagement and activity from our alumni and supporters. November was a busy month with the Leaders in Law ceremony sponsored by the Idaho Business Review, the McNichols and Regional moot court competitions, Idaho State Bar Road Show events, numerous other meetings and events, and, of course, a well-deserved Fall Break.

Leaders in Law
On November 15, we joined in celebration with the local legal community for the Idaho Business Review Leaders in Law awards. About 250 people attended to honor 17 law professionals. Nominated by their colleagues, reviewed by their peers (past honorees), and, ultimately, chosen by their own community, they represent “the best of the best.”
Our own Professor Elizabeth Brandt received the Educator Award. Professor Brandt joined the College of Law in 1988 and will retire in June 2019 after 31 years of teaching as she moves on to the next exciting chapter of her life. Well done Professor Brandt! We are honored to have you as part of the College of Law family.
In addition, honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award was College of Law alum Roy Eiguren, ’77. We often say that whatever the beginnings, the College of Law can help our alums go anywhere and do anything. Mr. Eiguren’s highly successful and diverse career is perfect proof of that argument. Congratulations!
Of course, we have many alums doing incredible things, and many of them were also honored for their great work. Congratulations again to our alumni who were also honored as Leaders in Law: Jeffrey Brownson, ’06 (Sole Practitioner), Debra Groberg, ’15 (Up & Coming), Franklin Lee, ’99 (Partner), Bryan Norton, ’15 (Educator), Shelli Stewart, ’06 (Unsung Hero), Jason Stolworthy, ’03 (Unsung Hero), and Matthew Wilde, ’94 (In-House Counsel). Well done! We hope to see many more of our alums honored in the future.
McNichols Appellate Moot Court Competition
The final round of the 30th Annual Judge Raymond McNichols Moot Court Competition was held in Moscow on Friday, November 9. Congratulations to Top Oralist, Alyson Acheson, and other winners: Runner-Up Oralist – Caitlyn Becker; Top Brief – Michael Bowers; Runner-Up Brief – Aspen Compton-Hoyte; Top Overall Advocate – Audrey Thorne; and Runner-up Overall Advocate – Aspen Compton Hoyte.
Thank you to our volunteer judges: Justice Joel Horton (Idaho Supreme Court); Judge B. Lynn Winmill (U.S. District Court, District of Idaho); Judge Cynthia Meyer (First Judicial District of Idaho); Judge Gerald McHugh (US District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania); and John McNichols (Williams & Connolly, LLP).
The Competition is funded by an endowment named in honor of the late Judge McNichols who was one of Idaho’s most highly respected jurists as well as one of the College of Law’s most distinguished alumni. Thank you to all of the donors who support this endowment and provide our students with the opportunity for this important skills training.
Every Gift Makes a Difference
As you think about your year-end charitable giving I ask that you consider making a gift to help support the College of Law and make a difference for our students. As many of you know, the cost of legal education continues to rise, even as we at the College do our best to keep law school affordable. My primary fund-raising goal is to increase the number and amount of scholarships we can provide to students who otherwise could not afford law school. All alumni should have received an annual giving letter in recent weeks which includes giving options and a return envelope. You can also go online to the College of Law website to make your gift. If you would like information about making a multi-year pledge or planned gift, please contact Michele Bartlett at bartlett@uidaho.edu or 208-364-4044.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
