Dear Alumni and Friends,

Pro bono work is part of the foundation of what we do at the College of Law. Indeed, such service is at the heart of the Idaho legal community and our profession. Retired Idaho Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Jones is an inspiring example of this passion and commitment to serving others. Recently featured in a story in the Idaho Statesman, he is taking his experiences as a young soldier in Vietnam to advocate for refugees in Idaho, including working with the Idaho Law Foundation’s Volunteer Lawyer Program to boost the number of lawyers helping refugees who struggle to afford legal assistance. I hope you will follow Justice Jones’ example and serve your communities via the volunteer lawyer program in Idaho or your jurisdiction. We strive to instill this commitment to service in our students, and in 2016, students performed 8,175 approved hours of pro bono legal service. In recognition of this service, the College was named by National Jurist Magazine as the law school with the greatest community impact. Between clinic hours, pro bono service and externships, our students contributed on average 148 hours to public service, the highest number of hours per student in the country. I am very proud of the life-changing work our students and alumni perform each year.

Sherman J. Bellwood Lecture

Next week, the College of Law welcomes Anita Hill for the annual Sherman J. Bellwood Lecture. As in years past, there will be both a Moscow and Boise event. She will speak on Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the ballroom of the Grove Hotel in Boise. The event begins at 5 p.m. Mountain time, with a public reception followed by remarks. She will deliver the Bellwood lecture, “It’s Now On Us: Reporting on the Status of Women and Girls,” in Moscow at 2:30 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Bruce M. Pitman Center’s International Ballroom. It will be streamed at uidaho.edu/live. Earlier in the day, the College of Law and the Women’s Center will sponsor the Sexual Harassment: Law and Perception Panel at 10:30 a.m. Pacific time in the Clearwater/Whitewater Rooms in the Idaho Commons. All events are free and open to the public.

Idaho Patent Pro Bono Program

The College of Law and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are pleased to announce the launch of the Idaho Patent Pro Bono Program, which facilitates the placement of qualified Idaho inventors seeking advice about the patent process with volunteer attorneys who are qualified to practice before the Patent and Trademark Office. A special announcement about the launch will take place at 6 p.m. at Boise Start-up week on Oct. 4. Information on the Idaho Patent Pro Bono Program, together with application forms for qualified inventors and interested volunteer attorneys, can be found here.

IBR Leaders in Law

Congratulations to UI faculty and alumni who will receive IBR Leaders in Law awards Nov. 16. Our own Professor Maureen Laflin will receive the Educator award; she joined UI in 1991 and has served as the director of our clinical programs since 1998 until this year as she phases into retirement. This is a much deserved recognition.

Also congratulations to our alumni Tyler J. Anderson '02, David Arkoosh '11, Michael Balder '94, Jan M. Bennetts '89, Walter Bithell '68, William Fletcher ' 08, Kristina Fugate ' 12 and David Stanish ' 05 for being named a Leader in Law. Law Advisory Council chair, Meghan Sullivan Conrad '04 and vice chair Peg Dougherty ' 99, will also be honored. The Hon. Candy Dale '82  will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement award.

Two of our adjunct faculty also will be honored, Ronald T. Caron Jr. and Matthew T. Christensen.

Faculty Authored Books

The College of Law is always proud to celebrate the hard work of our faculty members. In the previous year, many of our faculty have authored books. Among them are:

• “Ecological Restoration in International Environmental Law” is the first published book to examine comprehensively the relationship between international environmental law and ecological restoration. Co- authored by UI’s Anastasia Telesetsky with An Cliquet and Afshin Akhtar-Khavari.
   
• “Land Use and Sustainable Development Law, Cases and Materials” enables professors to teach a broad range of traditional and innovative land use law subjects, ranging from zoning and site planning to sustainable development. Co-authored by UI’s Stephen R. Miller, John R. Nolon, Patricia E. Salkin and Jonathan D. Rosenbloom.
   
• “Summary of Idaho Employment Termination Law” is a complete guide for Idaho lawyers who need to brush up on employment law and out-of-state lawyers who need an introduction to Idaho workplace law. By UI’s Monique C. Lillard.
   
• The fourth edition of “The Fundamentals of Federal Taxation” is a problem-based, transaction-oriented treatment of the basics of federal taxation. Co-authored by UI’s John A. Miller and Jeffrey A. Maine.
   
• “Problems and Solutions for Federal Income Taxation” includes more than 400 examples and is broken into 42 chapters that are accessed by topic, code section, case name or keyword.  Co-authored by UI’s John A. Miller and Jeffrey A. Maine.
