Don Burnett Set to Retire
At the end of the spring semester, Don Burnett will formally retire from the UI. Don first joined the UI in 2002 as dean of the College of Law. This position brought him back to his home state after he spent 12 years at the University of Louisville School of Law as dean and professor. In addition to his 12 years as dean of the College of Law, Don served as interim president of the university from 2013-14. For the past two years, he has been at the College of Law as faculty.
Don’s professional career has been one of service to his profession and to the communities in which he has lived. In the 2013 issue of Idaho Law, Stacie Jones wrote a great article profiling Don’s career as he transitioned to the role as interim president of UI. I encourage you to read the article on our website.
The College of Law will celebrate Don’s service to the UI at two upcoming events. On March 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Moscow at the Bruce M. Pitman Center, International Ballroom, North and on April 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center in Boise. I invite you to join us at one or both events and to extend your thanks and best wishes to Don and his wife Karen as they embark on the next phase of their lives together.
College to Offer Master of Laws Degree in Fall 2016
On February 18 the State Board of Education granted its approval for the College of Law to begin offering a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in fall 2016. The LL.M. is a postgraduate law degree where students gain expertise in a specialized area of law. The College of Law will enroll international students who have a first law degree from a foreign country. Students will be able to choose an emphasis in democracy, justice and the American legal system, natural resources and environmental law, business law and entrepreneurship or litigation and alternative dispute resolution. I am excited about the program and look forward to welcoming a new group of students to the College of Law.
2016 Idaho Law Review Symposium
The 2016 Idaho Law Review Symposium is set for April 1 in Boise at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center. This year’s symposium is titled “Equality in Employment” and will feature panel discussions on the topics of pregnancy discrimination, LGBT rights, equal pay and exploitative labor practices. The Honorable Candy Dale ’82, U.S. Magistrate Judge of the District of Idaho will be the keynote presenter. The Law Review Symposium is entirely student planned and coordinated. I hope you plan to attend the program and support our students. Register online.
Have a great month, and, as always, keep us up to date about your life and career highlights by sending updates to Terri Muse, assistant dean for external relations: tmuse@uidaho.edu.

February was a very busy month of travel for me. I attended two American Bar Association Dean Conferences in California and traveled to Boise several times. During my trip to Boise on February 25, I had the pleasure of attending the Idaho Business Review’s Women of the Year event. Among the 50 Idaho women whom were recognized, four were University of Idaho faculty and staff: Cori Mantle-Bromley, dean of the College of Education; SeAnne Safaii-Waite, associate professor of family and consumer science for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and two from the College of Law–Barb Lock, professor, and Terri Muse, assistant dean for external relations. It was a wonderful event, and I extend my congratulations to these members of the Vandal family.
