Happy 2016! The spring semester is in full swing, and I am pleased to bring you information about upcoming events and other updates from the College of Law.

2016 Denton Darrington Annual Lecture on Law and Government

This year’s lecture will be held Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center in Boise. A reception and building tours will begin at 4 p.m. MST, and the lecture will be at 5. The lecturer is Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis and the topic is “Building the Just, Speedy and Inexpensive Civil Courts of Tomorrow: Why We Cannot Afford to Fail.”

Justice Kourlis served in the Colorado judiciary for nearly two decades as a trial judge and then as a justice of the Colorado Supreme Court. She established the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System in 2006 and serves as its Executive Director. The Institute is a national, independent research center dedicated to facilitating continuous improvement and advancing excellence in the American legal system.

If you are unable to attend in person, the lecture will also be a live webcast via Idaho Public Television beginning at 5 p.m. MST/4 p.m. PST. The link to the webcast will be available on the Darrington Lecture page on the College of Law website.

I want to thank Justice Linda Copple Trout and Professor Don Burnett for their efforts to bring Justice Kourlis to Idaho for this event. The Denton Darrington Annual Lecture on Law and Government was begun in 2013 to honor former Idaho State Senator Denton Darrington who served as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 23 years. The lecture is sponsored by the University of Idaho College of Law, the Idaho Supreme Court, and the Idaho State Bar and Law Foundation. The lecture series is designed to address a wide range of topics related to the improved administration of justice, and features national, state and regional speakers to address Idaho citizens, students, and officials from all three branches of government.

“Representing Justice: Invention, Controversy and Rights in City-States and Democratic Courtrooms” Lecture set for April 26

I am very pleased to share that on Tuesday, April 26, the College of Law will welcome Yale Law Professors Judith Resnik and Dennis Curtis to the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center for a noon-hour lecture. Professors Resnik and Curtis are co-authors of the 2012 book “Representing Justice: Invention, Controversy and Rights in City-States and Democratic Courtrooms.” The book traces the development of public courthouse art and architecture and includes a profile of the murals in the Old Ada County Courthouse – now the Idaho Law and Justice Learning Center. The lecture will be open to the public. More details and registration information will be available soon. Special thanks to Professor Stephen Miller for arranging for this important and timely program.

College of Law to Participate in New Diversity Initiative

On Friday, Jan. 22, the College of Law announced that it is one of four law schools nationwide that was selected to participate in a new program aimed at increasing diversity among law professionals. Created by the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), the Legally Inspired Cohort (CLIC) is a pilot program that will recruit individuals from a range of backgrounds and offer continuous academic, financial and other support services through their first year of law study. Along with UI, other participating colleges are the Drake Law School, Mitchell Hamline School of Law and Vermont Law School.

This partnership with CLEO demonstrates our commitment to diversity at the UI College of Law. We need to prepare our students to work in a global community, and this program helps broaden student access to legal education and provides a path toward success. Students accepted to the program will receive a $5,000 out-of-state tuition waiver and $500 from CLEO to cover enrollment costs. Each student studying at UI will also be assigned a third-year law student as a mentor.

For more information visit CLEO.

I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events and don’t forget to keep us up to date about your life and career highlights. We want to include alumni profiles as part of our First Monday communication. Contact Terri Muse, our Assistant Dean for External Relations at tmuse@uidaho.edu or 208-364-4044.
