Law Professor Named to U.S. Delegation Studying Long-term Policy Relationships with Taiwan

With support of nominations from U.S. Senator Jim Risch and Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, Professor Anastasia Telesetsky recently was selected as one of ten American academics to participate in the U.S. Young Scholars Delegation to the Republic of China (Taiwan). The delegation also included representatives from the University of California/Berkeley, University of Southern California, the Naval Postgraduate School, California State University, University of California Irvine, and the University of California Santa Cruz.

Professor Telesetsky, who teaches international law at the University of Idaho, noted that Taiwan is of particular importance to the State of Idaho because it is Idaho’s second largest export market based on trade in semiconductors and agricultural commodities. In fact, the State of Idaho has a trade representative based in Taipei, Taiwan.

From November 9 to November 17, 2012, the U.S. delegation met with high-level political decision-makers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Defense, Fisheries Agency, Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, Straits Exchange Foundation, Council for Economic Planning and Development, Taiwan Stock Exchange, and National Taiwan University (Taiwan’s first-ranked university). The purpose of the meetings was to create a foundation for collaborative U.S.–Taiwan long-term policy relationships. As a result of the delegation’s visit, the University of Idaho may have enhanced opportunities to foster international collaboration and to host lecturers on Taiwanese history, politics, and law.

For further information, contact Professor Telesetsky.

Website "Kudos" Feature Puts Spotlight on Faculty, Staff, and Student Achievements

An intra-College of Law communication known as “kudos” is now available on the College’s website. Noteworthy achievements by members of our academic community, such as scholarly publications, faculty presentations at academic and professional conferences, staff-related events, and notable accomplishments by students or student organizations are noted.

For example, the latest “kudos” postings recognize the publication by Professor Richard Seamon of his new book, Strategies and Techniques for Teaching Administrative Law; publication of The Columbia River Treaty Revisited: Transboundary River Governance in the Face of Uncertainty, edited by Professor Barbara Cosens; recent scholarly presentations in the United States and Canada by Professors Cosens, Wendy Gerwick Couture, Angelique Townsend EagleWoman, and John (“Jack”) Miller; an article by law library Professor Ruth Funabiki providing a guide to Idaho’s court assistance publications; a celebration of twenty-one years of service to the academy and legal profession by retiring law library cataloguing assistant Jane Lear; and the successful completion and defense of an interdisciplinary thesis, “A Water Balance Model to Assess the Technical, Legal, and Administrative Constraints on Lake Coeur d’Alene,” by Juris Doctor/Masters of Water Resources concurrent degree candidate Dylan Hedden-Nicely.

Second-year Law Curriculum in Boise Receives Boost From Generous Donor

The Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation, which previously committed $1 million to the University of Idaho for “tenant-specific” improvements in the ongoing renovation of the historic Ada County Courthouse, has donated an additional $100,000 to help launch the University’s second-year law curriculum in Boise. The curriculum, authorized in October by the University of Idaho Board of Regents (State Board of Education), will expand educational and career opportunities for students, and will enhance the College’s scholarship and teaching in business law, entrepreneurism, and economic development. The State Board further authorized submission of a funding request to the Governor and the Legislature to help underwrite the year-to-year costs of faculty, library, and operational expenses for the second-year program.

As noted on its website, the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation is “dedicated to advancing the great State of Idaho.” The Foundation has been a generous supporter of education and of the University of Idaho. Additional information about the planned second-year law curriculum is available from Lee Dillion, Associate Dean for Boise Programs.
