Jenny Gallegos (3L) Makes CLE Presentation to 2nd District Bar Association

Third-year law student Jenny Gallegos has brought her pre-law school professional experience and her law school training to bear on the Idaho laws for expunging juvenile justice-system records. And she has concluded that those laws need to be improved. She explained the current laws, and the need to reform them, in a lunch-time continuing legal education (CLE) program for the Second District Bar Association at its February 2019 meeting in Lewiston, Idaho. Entitled “The Lacking Promise of Juvenile Expungement in Idaho,” Jenny’s talk kicked off a new monthly speakers series that the 2nd District Bar Association has inaugurated to honor the memory of long-time member and tireless advocate Linda Pall. Jenny explained during her CLE that the Idaho juvenile expungement laws are hard to understand, even for lawyers, not to mention laypeople who seek expungement. Jenny also identified specific ways that the laws can be amended to better inform people of their rights under the laws and to make those rights easier to enforce. Jenny’s recommendations draw upon not only her legal training at the College of Law but also her experience working as a juvenile probation officer with Ada County for nearly four years and her master’s-level course work in criminal justice at Boise State University. Jenny’s presentation is based on an article that is soon to be published in the Idaho Law Review.
