Animal Workers Medical Surveillance

What we do for animal workers

In order to comply with National Institutes of Health (NIH) assurance statement and to ensure that university employees are not at risk of contracting an animal-related illness due to exposure to farm, research and laboratory animals, EHS coordinates a medical surveillance program for animal workers.

How you can participate

The Office of Research Assurances requires those participating in animal-based teaching and research projects, all university personnel listed on animal care and use protocols, and anyone employed at a university animal facility must complete, sign, and submit the consent for medical evaluation and associated medical documentation (which will be kept confidential).

Medical surveillance includes the completion of medical history forms that are reviewed by a physician. After this review, the physician may recommend a physical, serological testing or other tests depending on the employee’s individual medical history and the species of animals with which the employee has contact. Medical records from the program are maintained by the physician, not EHS, and are subject to HIPAA regulations. Finally, all medical expenses relating to the program are paid by the employee's department.
