Part 200: ALARA
200.10 Introduction
The unique property of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment to emit energy in the form of particle or electromagnetic radiation, which can cause biological damage, is the primary concern of any radiation safety program. The federal government has established limits on the amount of radiation personnel may receive. However, it is the intent of a radiation safety program, and a regulatory requirement, to maintain as low as possible the amount of radiation received by an individual. This concept is called As Low As Reasonably Achievable - ALARA. It is the responsibility of the university and those individuals using radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment to practice ALARA at all times.
200.20 Complying with ALARA
This radiation safety manual has been provided to assist the user in complying with the concept of ALARA. By following the provisions of this manual, the user will be able to minimize or eliminate any unnecessary exposure to radiation while using radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment.
