Database Administration

Database Administrators are responsible for ensuring the reliability, stability, and performance of the databases on which the enterprise applications are hosted. The cornerstone of this suite of applications is the university ERP, Banner. This application provides critical functionality for managing finance, human resource, payroll, student, financial aid and advancement processes, as well as web access to this information through Vandalweb. The database administrators are also responsible for managing access to all enterprise databases.

In addition to the below services, Database Administrators provide SQL Server Hosting (service details coming soon).

Services

Description

ITS provides administrative support for Banner INB, VandalWeb, Banner Workflow and Argos Reporting, as well as other enterprise applications. This service covers the management of the underlying Oracle databases and application servers that host Banner. It also covers any issues related to Banner printing. This service also addresses any security-related issues involving Banner or the other enterprise databases. 

Eligibility

ITS provides Banner database support to students, faculty, staff and departments at the University of Idaho.

Procedures and Service Agreements

The service is accessed through a browser through an encrypted SSL connection to the repository server.

ITS currently supports GIT as our enterprise wide repository back-end. Dedicated source code repositories are created on the repository server on request and access is managed at the repository level. One or more repositories can be requested. Developers can select from a number of GIT client tools depending on the needs of the development environment being used.

Description

ITS provides assistance in database design for business applications utilizing either Oracle or SQL Server RDBMS. Guidance can be provided for both relational and object-oriented database modeling efforts. ITS staff can either assist in the design effort or review completed designs before they are implemented in production. Designs will be evaluated for normalized structure and for performance considerations. Indexing, partitioning, file separation and RAID configuration will also be considered. Assistance for performance tuning issues on existing databases is also available.

Description

ITS provides overall coordination of technical implementations or other large IT initiatives. This service includes requirement gathering, project scoping, timeline creation and identification and coordination of staffing resources. 

Project manager will work with customer, as well as vendor if applicable, to identify all required activities and resource constraints in order to develop a realistic, achievable timeline. Once established, the project manager will work with project participants to achieve the identified project goals.
