Nuisance Animal Management

The University of Idaho has established a humane nuisance animal program to guide the management of such animals on university property. Led by the Division of Infrastructure, the plan will guide UI staff in dealing with non-research animals that pose a health or property risk.

In the rare instance of such an animal being identified, UI staff will decide if removal is necessary. If removal is necessary, a licensed contractor may be hired or UI may trap the animal in question. Trapping will only be done when traps can be actively monitored and removal done expediently. Trapped animals will be removed from campus by Moscow Police Department/Animal Control, which has procedures for humanely handling such animals.

Euthanasia of nuisance animals is considered a last resort and will not be done by any UI staff. Non-research animals not posing a health or property risk will remain on university property.

UI staff involved in the Nuisance Animal Management Program are educated on the details of the program.

The Humane Society of the Palouse is helping provide educational materials for those living on campus who have pets in order to prevent instances of abandoned animals.

To learn more about the program, view the Q&A.

If you have concern about an animal on campus, call Facilities at 208-885-6246 or Public Safety at 208-885-2254.
