Fair Labor Standards Act Overtime Open Forum
Soon there will be an open forum focusing on the recently announced changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act regarding overtime. During the forum we will take the time to learn about the FLSA to understand the changes before going on to identify the impact of the announcement. We will discuss the choices we face and possible consequences whether perceived as positive or negative and seek input from employees regarding concerns.
Wesley Matthews, Executive Director of Human Resources, will be presenting June 24 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Administration Building Auditorium. For those unable to attend in person, the presentation will be streamed live and questions can be email to Overtime@uidaho.edu during the presentation.
New Process for Temporary Hires
In order to increase the efficiency of personnel operations, certain elements of the recruiting and hiring process are now delegated to managers and supervisors. Specifically, formal searches are no longer required for any category of temporary employment, and we have lifted the requirement to use the PeopleAdmin system.
In short, a manager or supervisor may now hire a temporary employee without a search and without a search waiver. However, hiring authorities must still follow all other university policies and procedures, as well as state and federal employment laws (for example, the nepotism policy prohibits a manager from hiring a child, even in the case of temporary employment). A complete set of guidelines has been developed, and can be found here.
