Meet Lisa Snyder, Staff Council Member

Lisa Snyder is the Assistant to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Her responsibilities include maintaining the VP calendar and travel arrangements along with events and meetings initiated by the office. She has worked for the University of Idaho for a little over three years in two different positions in the Vice President’s Office. She came to us from the Moscow School District where she worked for twelve years. She is one of two representatives from the Office of Research and has joined staff council in order to give every staff member a voice and to elevate the awareness of the needs of the staff of the university.

The University of Idaho’s McCall Outdoor Science School (MOSS) won a University Economic Development Association (UEDA) Award of Excellence Oct. 22 for serving up innovative STEM educational programming in ways that sustain regional economic development. Read about the UEDA award.

U of I Presidential Search

Storbeck/Pimentel & Assoc, the search firm supporting U of I’s presidential search, encourages members of the U of I Community to submit comments regarding the qualifications and characteristics of the next president of U of I. Members of the U of I community are also encouraged to submit nominations and suggestions for the next U of I president to the search firm. Information will be forthcoming regarding how to make nominations. In the meantime, any nominations submitted to will be forwarded to the firm.

In the next weeks, the firm should have created a solid position profile based on feedback from the community, staff, faculty and students. This goes deeper than a job description because we need the right fit for the job. There will be a solid six weeks of recruitment time before the holidays and they will be resuming the search again in January. The hope is to have interviews slated for February and to be done with the process in March, after the candidates have been brought to campus to meet all the constituents.

Please use the links above to nominate candidates and to provide additional feedback you feel the committee needs to know for their selection. It is in the best interest of the search committee to move quickly, however; speed is only second to quality. If there are no good candidates to bring to campus, the search will continue until the right candidate makes it to the table. They are more interested in doing it right the first time!

University Financial Report

Assistant Vice President of Facilities Brian Johnson attended the Oct. 23 leadership breakfast, and prepared the below summary of the university financial situation, as discussed by Brian Foisy, vice president of Finance and Administration, Dean Kahler, vice provost of Strategic Enrollment, and Trina Mahony, budget director.

Continuing declines in enrollment serve to increase the delta between U of I’s General Education expenses vs. net revenues. U of I’s expenses have exceeded revenues for nine of the last ten years, including this year. As in past years, U of I will make up this shortfall through a one-time hold back. In many of the past years, central reserves were used to cover this deficit. Central reserves cannot continue to cover the shortfall. Last year, the deficit was covered by the Provost and Enrollment Management, drawing upon their respective reserves. This year, U of I will draw from each Vice Presidents’ carry forward to meet the shortfall. In addition to the $2.1M funding shortfall, U of I wishes to provide $2.9M toward UBFC funding needs — for a total of $5M needed in one-time funding to get through FY19.

This $5M will be drawn from carry forwards across U of I. Remaining carry forward balances will be posted at the VP level, likely before the end of the week. VP’s will individually decide how to allocate any carry forward among their respective units.

U of I looks to implement permanent budget reductions in FY20. Ideally, these are recommended/submitted by Jan. 31, 2019. If needed, the U of I is willing to incrementally implement the changes with a combination of permanent and one-time reductions over a several year period. Total reductions sought include:

$3M revenue shortfall
$2M UBFC (permanent allocation to emerging strategic needs)
$2M enrollment contingency (permanent allocation to avoid future one-time shortfalls)
$2M presidential initiatives (permanent allocation to ongoing strategic needs)
$9M Total

The first two numbers ($3M + $2M = $5M) are pretty firm; the last two, totaling another $4M are placeholders at this time and may be adjusted. The $9M total represents a potential 5% reduction in U of I’s $180M Gen Ed budget. U of I leadership will be discussing/refining the respective VP shares of this $9M target over the coming weeks.

On a related topic, U of I has implemented a Faculty Strategic Hiring Plan, effective this FY. This is NOT a faculty hiring freeze; rather, every faculty hire (which includes gen ed funding) is scrutinized at the Provost level, confirming that hire is the right move for the U of I as a whole. This may/should result in some units being told ‘no’ they cannot rehire….and those resources might be shifted to another unit which should be growing. Apparently, a similar plan will emerge in the coming fiscal year governing staff hires. Perhaps a committee may be established in spring 2019 to define the processes and help U of I ready for implementation.

Tip for Your Performance Evaluation

Have you completed your annual required training? All regular faculty and staff, temporary faculty and staff, and student employees (including graduate students) with appointments lasting longer than three months must complete this training by no later than Friday, December 7, 2018. Failure to complete the course by the deadline will result in an unsatisfactory performance evaluation and ineligibility for a CEC or merit-based salary increase in 2019.

Outstanding Staff Awards

Nominations for the 2019 Outstanding Employee Awards, Staff Educational Awards, Outstanding Team Award, and the Lawrence C. McBride Prize open November 1st and are due by Friday, February 22, 2019. The Outstanding Staff Awards honor U of I non-faculty staff members who are doing an outstanding job in the areas of quality of service, exceptional effort, initiative, and interpersonal relations. Start thinking about worthy candidates now and look for the nominations link in an upcoming Today’s Register!

Established in 1972, the awards encourage more support and recognition of staff for their dedication and hard work over and above their job descriptions on behalf of the university. Outstanding Employee Awards are given in each university staff category, including:

  • Non-faculty Exempt;
  • Secretarial or Clerical;
  • Technical or Paraprofessional;
  • Service or Maintenance;
  • Skilled Craft;
  • Outstanding Administrator – no monetary prize.

The number of awards given is based upon the number of employees per category. Each recipient is presented with a plaque and a $1000 check in recognition of their outstanding services. The Larry C. McBride Prize recognizes an exempt employee who has demonstrated creativity, enthusiasm, the highest performance standards and exemplary service to the university. The recipient is presented with a plaque and a $1,500 (gross) check. The Outstanding Team Award recognizes a group of employees that has shown exceptional teamwork on one-time or unique non-routine projects. The team members are presented with certificates and a check (amount depends on number of team members). The Staff Educational Awards are given to children, grandchildren, stepchildren or legal dependents of full-time, board-appointed staff members or honored retirees. Students receive a certificate and an approximate $500 scholarship for the next academic year ($250/semester).

Free Footwear Traction Devices on Moscow Campus

In an effort to reduce weather related slips and falls this winter, Risk Management and Environmental Health and Safety have launched a limited pilot program to provide footwear traction devices free of charge to University of Idaho employees on a first come, first served basis. To be eligible, you must be a university faculty or staff member covered by the workers compensation program.  Additionally, Facilities, ITS and Auxiliary Services employees participate in their own internal programs and are not eligible for this traction device program. The traction devices will be available starting Oct. 15.

To get a pair for yourself:

  • Complete the Traction Device Program form and bring it with you to either U of I Risk (TLC 048 and 049) or Environmental Health and Safety (1108 W 6th Street) – blank forms will not be available at these offices.
  • Bring your Vandal Card.
  • You must pick up your devices in person; requests via email or campus mail cannot be fulfilled.
  • You must pick up your own pair of devices; someone may not come pick them up for you.
  • We suggest bringing the winter shoes/boots you will wear with these devices to ensure a good fit.

Please note: this is a limited pilot program to explore the feasibility of extending it to all employees, on and off campus, in the future. While it is not currently feasible to ship these off campus (considering the price of shipping may exceed the cost of the devices themselves), it is generally considered an acceptable purchase for a department to supply these devices for their employees’ use at work, as Facilities, Auxiliary Services and ITS do.

Campus Inclusion Project

We are a Vandal family — and like most families, we don’t all live in the same town. The University of Idaho has centers in Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Idaho Falls. Plus, out of Idaho’s 44 counties, there are U of I offices in 42 of them. The better we can get together on our projects and share U of I event experiences, the better we can serve Idaho students and our constituents. Members of Staff Council have joined forces with UCM to create the Campus Inclusion Project – a committee working to bridge the distance between the Moscow main campus and all our locations throughout the state.

Change to the Academic Calendar

Registrar Dwaine Hubbard and Controller Linda Campos presented at Faculty Senate a seconded motion of the UCC (University Curriculum Committee) to amend the academic calendar. Senate approved, in an 11 to 10 vote, a change to the Academic Calendar for the 2019-20 and 2026-27 academic years. During these two academic years, the fall semester will begin one week later than originally planned. The change was made to eliminate an extra week that was accidentally added to the academic calendar. The extra week would have created administrative issues in payroll for faculty on standard pay. Don’t fret, this is nothing new or weird, it just means we all get an extra week of summer!

UI-Coordinated Community Response Team Updates

The U of I Coordinated Community Response Team (UI-CCRT) — a group of U of I and Moscow community members dedicated to preventing, responding to and educating our university community on gender-based violence — has been hard at work this semester. This team is developing programs, conducting trainings and workshops, and engaging students, staff and faculty in efforts related to fulfilling the goals of the Women’s Center’s grant from the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW)—to reduce incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking, and to improve victim services for all individuals.

Through the OVW grant, UI-CCRT is leading a number of initiatives to improve the response to gender-based violence on campus. Read about UI-CCRT News, including past trainings and programs, scheduled events, and what you can do.

PTS PIT Crew Services are provided on U of I’s main Moscow campus for FREE from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. From 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. call 208-885-6424 and from 4:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. call 208-885-7054. You must be with your vehicle to receive assistance. While PIT Crew calls aren’t quite as dramatic as a hit HBO series, it’s hard not to feel a sense of urgency when someone is stuck with places they need to go!

ECHO Awarded Behavioral Health Training Grant

The University of Idaho Boise ECHO program has been awarded funding by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration competitive grant competition for $374,919 over a three-year period to offer behavioral health trainings for healthcare professionals in Idaho. Read about the grant.

Also, ECHO Idaho has been nominated to receive an Idaho Rural Health Hero award at the IRHA Annual Meeting and Awards Reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Riverside Hotel in Boise.

Rangeland Forum Rides Again

The 2018 Rangeland Fall Forum in Salmon prompted land managers, ranchers, conservationists, policy leaders and educators to consider past land management decisions and think critically about how those decisions present themselves today through the backdrop of collaborative projects taking place in Lemhi County.

McClure Center Exhibit

The McClure Center is delighted to announce the second McClure Center Gallery Exhibit, featuring Louise McClure and her role in public service. The exhibit covers her leadership in national and state arts administration, the Senate Wives Club and International Red Cross, public service broadly and the role the University of Idaho has played in her life. We encourage you to visit the exhibit in the GAR Building, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November through March.

Gavin Butterfield, Research Park Administrative Coordinator

Gavin Butterfield joined the U of I Coeur d’Alene team on October 29 as the Administrative Coordinator for the U of I Research Park out of Post Falls. Gavin joins us after most recently serving as the Administrative Coordinator for Entomology, Plant Pathology and Nematology in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences down in Moscow. He is a proud 2016 University of Idaho graduate and earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science & Health. Outside of work, Gavin is an avid sports enthusiast, crafter and builder, and outdoorsman. He really enjoys going out and helping take pictures and seeing the world with his wife, Bailey.

10th Anniversary of Women in Math & Science in the books

Women in Math & Science celebrated its 10th anniversary this year on October 2 & 3, bringing 150 high school sophomore girls from the twelve school districts in Region 1 to the Coeur d’Alene Harbor Center and North Idaho College for a day of presentations, hands-on experiments, and face-to-face connections with women in STEM professions. When asked about the impact of WIMS, Marie Schmidt, the center’s Community Water Resource Center Specialist, said, ”Women in Math & Science is a fantastic opportunity to introduce high school girls to the vast opportunities in STEM fields through interaction with female scientists and participation in a hands-on experiment. I love to see the girls’ enthusiasm and persistence in tackling the lab challenge! We feel that by enabling them to work in a university lab setting, they will be less intimidated in pursuing science classes when they go on to higher ed.” Women in Math & Science is a partnership between the College of Science and the Coeur d’Alene center.

Green Dot and Title IX trainings come to Coeur d’Alene

Emilie McLarnan (Coordinator, Violence Prevention Programs), Bekah MillerMacPhee, (Director, Office of Violence Against Women Project), and Erin Agidius (Director, Office of Civil Rights and Investigations) facilitated lively trainings for the Coeur d’Alene staff and faculty that focused on the Green Dot bystander intervention training program as well as effective handling of Title IX disclosures of interpersonal violence. Participant response to the trainings was overwhelmingly positive and highly recommended to any and all staff and faculty of the university. Inspire Idaho grows in southern Idaho with the help of university staff and faculty

We are proud to welcome the new Rexburg and Idaho Falls teams to the university-led, barrier-breaking coding initiative Inspire Idaho! InspireID has come alive thanks to the early work of U of I staff and faculty from all three centers and university extension educators from around the state. The roots of the land grant university grounded the program not just in major cities, but in rural towns where education opportunities can be difficult to access. U of I staff and faculty members now lead and mentor nine live teams and over 200 active learners in the following areas: Boise, Bonners Ferry, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Plummer, Rexburg and Weiser. Careers on Wheels 

On September 21, U of I Idaho Falls staff participated in Idaho Falls’ annual Careers on Wheels (CoW) Day, teaching over a thousand area sixth-graders about potato pathology, robotics and attending the University of Idaho.

Spirit Week Door Decorating Contest
