Nichole Vietz, Fiscal Management Assistant | President's Office

A big kudos to Nichole Vietz in the President's Office who is always so patient and helpful. Given her immense workload, her professionalism and patience are amazing. She is truly someone that deserves extra recognition. A difficult and complicated process took extra time on her part, yet she was thanking others for their small part. She has always taken extra steps to solve issues. I wanted somehow to let her know how much I have very much appreciated her attitude and work ethics. Thank you, Nichole. Anna Thompson, Assistant to Faculty Secretary/Ombuds

Kudos to Mark who almost singlehandedly creates and develops all the marketing and advertising for all of the numerous events, resources, and new we have coming out of Career Services. mark goes above and beyond with each project he does. He is so good at his job that many of our campus partners ask if he can help with some of their marketing efforts! Eric Anderson, Manager, Career Advising and Professional Development

Career Advising Team, Career Development Liaisons | Career Services

Major Kudos to the Career Advising Team in Career Services. This year we moved to a specialized model of services, where advisors focus on specific colleges and spend part of their week taking career appointments in the respective college buildings. In just Fall 2016 alone, career advisors saw 7,230 students through appointments, drop-ins, and workshops/presentations. To give you a perspective on how big that is, in all of Fall 2015-Sprin 2016 we saw 7,830 students total, which was a yearly record. With our specialized model, Career Services saw almost as many students in one semester as we did all of last year. Eric Anderson, Manager, Career Advising and Professional Development

Dianna Waskom, Team Cleaning Lead| Facilities

Dianna came up with a great idea to utilize our auto scrubber to clean the atrium floor instead of hand mopping. We had never thought to try this in the past. It worked so well we are now doing it a couple times each week. Her idea has really helped keep the SRC looking good, especially with the winter weather and all the ice melt that gets tracked in by our patrons.

Brian Mahoney, Associate Director, Facilities and Operations - Campus Recreation

Daryl Power, Video Operations Lead | Facilities Electric Shop

An outside contractor severed multiple data and AV connections while relocating a floor box in the auditorium of JEB 104, taking the multimedia system offline. Although he already had a full plate of tasks for the day, Daryl rushed over to the room and swiftly and expertly re-terminated the data lines so the upcoming events in the room could go on as scheduled. Daryl's timely action and dedication to duty spared many people from the inconvenience of having to have their events moved or cancelled. Greg Clifford, Classroom Technology Services Manager

Terry Saunders, Team Cleaning Specialist | Facilities

I would like to acknowledge and thank our building custodian, Terry, who has cared for our building ALL semester (and much longer). In particular, I and the staff of the Child Development Laboratory would like to make sure that not only he, but his supervisor(s) know of the excellent service he provides to us. He knows our routines and what matters to us, and often initiates special care that he notices we need. In addition he is so friendly and professional in his service to us and well represents the University of Idaho and the caring community that makes working here a pleasure. Suzanne Planck, Director Child Development Laboratory

Jeanette Weidig, Team Cleaning Specialist | University Support Services
Scott Springer, Team Cleaning Specialist | University Support Services
Luke Kilgore Brown, Team Cleaning Specialist | University Support Services
Dan Manwaring, Team Cleaning Specialist | University Support Services

The USS Team Cleaning Specialists do a fabulous job keeping the Kibbie Dome clean for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. This is truly a challenge, every day, for this small group of people to do so much work but yet, they get it done in a timely manner and are a joy to be around. Their supervisor, Joe Hunt, is always busy and never seems to slow down. He not only manages the cleaning of the Kibbie Dome, and all of the offices within; but also the maintenance of the Kibbie Dome with his maintenance staff. I am always amazed at how much this small group accomplishes, on a daily basis, with all of the different events that happen each and every day in the Kibbie Dome. They maintain all of the offices on each floor, besides keeping the concourses and the bleachers clean in the Kibbie Dome. They are an amazing, organized group of people. Cheryl Gardner, Business Manager | University Support Services

Liza Morris, Project Architect | Facilities

Greg Clifford, Classroom Technical Services Manager | ITS
Matt Kitterman, Instructional Systems Specialist | ITS
Ray Anderson, Director of IT | College of Engineering

Earlier this afternoon I participated in the testing of our new videoconference systems linking EP204 and CDA/Harbor Center room 240B…and all went smoothly. As project architect and manager of this critical project linking/expanding the computer science program in both Moscow and CDA, Liza Morris did a professional and unwavering job of pushing this project through on time with exemplary results. Liza’s efforts were joined by equally great work on the part of Greg Clifford and Matt Kitterman from ITS. I’ll laud the efforts of our own Ray Anderson as well. All in all…a great team effort. It’s a great room and Moscow-CDA faculty look forward to using it beginning this Thursday. —As team leader, It couldn’t/wouldn’t have happened without Liza’s hard work and problem solving. Barry Willis, Associate Dean for Outreach | College of EngineeringSam Koester, Management Assistant | College of Graduate Studies

Sam Koester has been a joy to work with since he became an indispensable part of our team at College of Graduate Studies over 3 years ago. One of his fortés is creating highly visible events that have made COGS more successful. He is instrumental in getting 3MT Dissertation off the ground. Innovation Showcase has increased visibility and U of I involvement under his direction. His impressive artistic ability is something our office has been missing and is highly valued! COGS is part of an alliance of 4 universities funded by a grant from NSF, whose goal is to increase American Indian/Native Alaskan students in STEM. His assistance to our Interim Dean has been instrumental and I know he relies on Sam consistently. He is genuinely committed to this university. Thank you, Sam! Cheri Cole, Management Assistant | College of Graduate Studies

U of I Catering Team| Vandals Dining

The Career Services office hosted an Open House on Nov. 16 to share our services with students, staff and faculty and to celebrate National Career Development Day. The U of I Catering Team setup a professional, sharp looking food and beverage station for pizza and soda. The team also coordinated well responding to several phone calls I made to them during the event. The issues were resolved very quickly. Thank you for taking such good care of our event needs. You helped make our Open House a huge success! Jamie Garlinghouse, Employer Relations Specialist | Career Services

Renee Schlickenmeyer, Departmental Grant Administrator| Idaho Space Consortium

Renee' is n great Departmental Grant Administrator. She, along with all the other DGAs, submits subaward requests to OSP on a regular basis. DGAs act as intermediaries between the subrecipient and faculty, making sure that all proper documentation is complete before submitting it to OSP. As the subaward administrator, I need good DGAs, they are vital to the subaward process. Renee' is always prompt in submitting subaward requests. She includes all documentation and is quick to report any changes in information. Renee' has also reviewed templates and given feedback on how OSP can improve its subaward process. She has gone above and beyond her DGA duties. Claire Freund, Associate Contract Review Officer | Office of Sponsored Programs

October 2016

Paul Warnick, Arboretum Horticulturist | Arboretum

I was directed to Paul to share with him the lack of trash bin near the WWI Grove in the C.H. Shattuck Arboretum. Paul connected with me right away and shared with me the process on what it takes to add trash bins to the Arboretum. Paul worked his magic and shared with me recently that there is a new trash bin now located at the WWI Grove! As this is an area with three nice benches in a quiet area just south of the Administration Building it is nice to have a place for people to put their waste while they are enjoying what our fine campus has to offer. David Pittsley, Manager Assistant | Office of the President

September 2016

Kim Ridle, Benefits Specialist | Benefits Services

Kim is so clear and easy to work with. With my complex benefits situation, Kim has been so careful to be complete, timely, and accurate with her information and guidance. She is an example of the best of the U of I - warm, professional and thorough. Many thanks! Ashleigh Bright, ALCP-Program Coordinator, International Programs Office

August 2016

Mark Spellmire, Operations Coordinator | Campus Recreation

Mark took initiative on his own to develop a virtual tour (through Google) of the Student Recreation Center. He did an extensive amount of research, came in early in the morning on weekends to capture photos when the building was closed and worked hand in hand with our web coordinator to make it work within the U of I parameters. In addition, Mark has blogged about his experience and has received many inquiries from other schools on how it was done. The tour can now be seen on our Campus Recreation website. Awesome job, Mark! Brian Mahoney, Associate Director | Campus Recreation

Becky provided exemplary and much appreciated service in an extremely pleasant fashion. She creatively solved a difficult problem and maintained a delightfully cheerful attitude throughout. She is a credit to U of I and deserves recognition. Richard Vaughan Williams, Professor | Chemistry

Suzanne Aaron, Sponsored Program Administrator | Office of Research and Economic Development

Suzanne is the new Sponsored Programs Administrator assigned to work with the College of Natural Resources. Our college submits a high volume of proposals and some of the agencies we work with do not follow the normal grant processes so many times each proposal, agency, set of rules, etc. are unique. Suzanne has done a great job of getting up to speed on the nuances of CNR proposals and our high volume. She has been wonderful working with our faculty members and me personally. She's been a great addition to the OSP/CNR grant team and I am glad to get to work with her. Cathryn Knock, Associate Director Admin Services | College of Natural Resources

Michael Salmon, Transfer Specialist | Registrar's Office

Michael consistently goes above and beyond to make sure that he can help students. His customer service is such that I will receive calls specifically to tell me how much a student appreciates the time and effort that he puts in to make sure that he does everything he can to make sure that information for a student is accurate and complete. For a relatively new employee he is a pleasure to work with and shows genuine care and concern for our students. Rebecca Frost, Assistant Registrar | Registrar's Office

Rachel Otto and Joe Roberts, Career Development Liaisons| Career Services

Rachel Otto and Joe Roberts have been absolutely amazing in their roles as Career Development Liaisons since starting in March. They both hit the ground running and have been actively involved with their respective colleges. Bill Loftus, Public Information Officer | CALS Communications

A plate glass door was broken at Ag Science on Tuesday, July 19, just after the end of the shift for the crew who cleans the building. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who assisted with the aftermath of this incident. Bill Loftus (CALS Communications), who, after reporting the incident to Facilities, stayed on-scene to help steer foot traffic away from the area, and even volunteered to assist me with the initial cleanup; Kelvin Daniels, Megan Grennille, and Elaina Perry (EHS Response Team), who cleaned up the blood from the person who was injured; Patrick Richardson and Jessica Lambert (Building Services Section A), who took over the final cleanup; Bart Schumacker (Interiors Shop), who got the new glass installed by the end of the day. Once again, thank you all. Your quick response was greatly appreciated. Peter Haworth, Custodial Foreman | Building Services - Section C

Jeremy Kermott, Technology Support Specialist | ITS

Contracts and Purchasing's new employee was in the VandalCard Office to get her new card. Jeremy Kermott divides his time between ITS and the VandalCard Office, and he happened to be the person that helped us that day. Jeremy saved us a trip to the Help Desk and did everything that we needed right then to get our new employee set up on the U of I network. He was pleasant, friendly, and went above and beyond to help someone new to the university. Thank you Jeremy, for volunteering to do more than what was required! Cynthia Adams, Assistant Buyer, Purchasing Services

June 2016

Rosie Groves, Financial Specialist | Accounts Payable

I wish to thank Rosie for expediting a couple of new vendor set ups into Banner last Friday. She was swamped with end of year documents, and I really needed to get a couple of requisitions onto the system buy could not as they were new to our vendor database. Spencer Martin, Clinical Faculty | LHSOM,

Melissa Adams, Advising Specialist | Advising Services,

Amy Kingston, Scheduling Coordinator | Registrar's Office

Thank you for going the extra mile this morning to help my daughter Erin with her class schedule. I have been so impressed with the U of I staff we have met -- from the campus store manager Scott who introduced Erin to art majors who work at the store, to the marching band director Spencer Martin, to Erin's art academic advisor Melissa Adams, and now, YOU! You could have simply transferred us to someone else, or told us that you're not able to help us. But you didn't. And that is an indication of the genuine commitment this university has for creating a caring community! I just wanted you to know you that your kindness and professionalism is appreciated. Lisa Stewart, Parent of an Incoming Student

Kathy Foss, Associate Director | Donor Relations and Stewardship

Kathy went beyond any expectations to help U of I Boise by preparing new hand-crafter decorations for an event with very short notice. She did this without being asked to do so and she volunteered her creativity and her time to help us create a very successful event in Boise. Kathy's response is what makes Vandals a true family and keeps the Vandal spirit alive among departments that do not interact that often. Thank you!!! Maria Ortego, Marketing and Communications Manager, U of I Boise

May 2016

Jamie Frausto, Team Cleaning Specialist | Facilities

Since Jaime has started, we have noticed how much he has improved our work environment. His attention to detail goes far beyond his job description, and the third floor is better for it. Beyond just basic cleaning, Jaime takes it upon himself to make sure that we are always fully stocked with supplies, and offers to help us when he sees a need. He even fixed a faucet that has been spraying incorrectly for years due to mineral buildup! He is so friendly and always greets us in the mornings with a "hello" and a smile. We are so grateful that he puts so much additional time and care into his job because it makes the whole floor a better place to work. We hope that he knows that we absolutely notice his hard work and are so appreciative of the efforts he takes on a daily basis to perform his job to the absolute best of his abilities. Thank you, Jaime, for all that you do for us and for being a part of our team. The Lab Group of Mark McGuire, Animal Sciences

I would like to give a "big" kudos to Kevin Ketchie in the President's Office for all of the remarkable things he does on the U of I Campus to make it that much brighter for all of us that work here. He has always been so responsive in addressing various needs and issues, and does so in a kind, respectful manner. He is a joy to work with. He always presents himself in a very positive manner, and represents the President's Office well. I sincerely appreciate everything he does, and I don't think he gets enough recognition for all of the different responsibilities that he is burdened with. However, he manages these graciously and with kindness. Thanks, so much, Kevin for all you do! — Cheryl Gardner, Business Manager, University Support Services

Candis Glassey, Assistant Director of Finance | University of Idaho Foundation

Candis is the Assistant Director of Finance at the University of Idaho Foundation, Inc. She has been an exemplary employee for the University and the Foundation for 14 years, and has gone above and beyond her duties to serve both this past semester. Glassey stepped up for the Foundations’ finance team when a co-worker was away from the office for an extended period of time. Kara Billington, Swim Instructor | Swim Center

Kara has done marvelous work with teaching my son about swimming! Before signing up with Kara we had tried a number of different instructors but she made a breakthrough. She has a gentle persistence that helped him gain the confidence he needed to work on his skills. Thank you Kara for helping him grow so much this semester! — Lauren Torok, Director, Advancement Services

Nicole Cook, Swim Instructor | Swim Center

Nicole was charged with showing my stubborn daughter the mechanics of swimming. It was a tough semester for Nicole! As the semester progressed, Nicole was able to convince my daughter that she could have fun AND learn to swim. The stubbornness would flair and Nicole used that to increase my daughter’s skill set as it that was the plan the whole time. (I wish I had that grace!) Thank you Nicole! — Lauren Torok, Director, Advancement Services

BEX and U of I Garage | Facilities

The BEX shop dropped everything and came to my aid in repairing all the water main breaks that we experienced when we had to take the I-Tank off line. They worked late into the night, well after their regular shift and without question. With their help we were able to get all the leaks repaired in a timely manner and without too much inconvenience. Lewis Paul came up with the idea to make a bypass road around the water leak in the middle of the street on the 6th Street Extension. He stayed through the middle of the night building that bypass road. This made it possible for us to safely repair the leak without interrupting traffic. I just want to give a big THANK YOU to all the guys in the Building Exterior Services Shop! — Elmer Johnson, Water Systems Manager, Facilities

Mike Holtaus and Nels Reese | Idaho Commons and Pitman Center

On April 28th a Parent stopped in the office to ask if there was a way for her to have a tour of the Administration Building. She loves the Admin Building and wanted to have a tour of the building. I sent out e-mails and got in touch with Brian Johnson who was happy to assist if possible. It all worked out that Mike was available and was part of the tour guides to provide access to parts of the building the Parent wanted to visit. The tour was put together quickly and on Friday, April 29th at 2pm Mike arrived ready to take the Parent around the Admin Building. It is always great to make something happen. It is even better that on short notice something can be put together to make another person very appreciated. This is what makes the U of I a great place to work, people from different departments working together to make something occur, even with busy schedules going on. Mike is a true team player to help out in this. Brian Johnson should also be commended for assistance and providing Mike's name to help with this request by a Parent. Team work all around! — David Pittsley, Office Manager Assistant, Office of the President

Charles Hatfield, Customer Service Representative | Facilities

When we visit facilities we are always welcomed with a warm smile and a greeting. Chuck always takes the time to greet everyone. We would like to take a minute and thank Chuck for all of his hard work. Whenever HR has needed his assistance, he has been on top of any requests. We recently had a few meetings to coordinate in facilities and he made this a smooth process. He took care of booking the room and making sure all equipment that was needed for our presentation was setup and ready when we arrived. He is always willing to go above and beyond with anything he does. Recently, we requested that HR be completely sanitized due to the fact almost half of HR was out sick with a nasty illness. He assured us that he would notify the fantastic custodial staff of the need for all our areas to be disinfected. This is just one small example of the great things Chuck does! Leslie Dorsey, Program Assistant | CNR McCall Outdoor Science School

Leslie is an incredible asset to the University community and the community at large. One of Leslie’s tasks is being a liaison between program staff and parents. I witnessed her successfully navigate a tricky topic with a parent so effectively this summer that the parent came in with a frown and left with a smile. She puts program participants at ease and is regularly bending over backwards to improve the MOSS experience for everyone. Not only is Leslie excellent with our guests, she is a fantastic colleague. She bucks human nature and steps up to complete ambiguous tasks around the office. When the recycling is full, Leslie will sort it without hesitation. The trash is overflowing in one can, she will empty all the cans. The bathroom sink is black from someone rinsing a fireboard in there, Leslie will wipe up the mess. A critical piece of technology failed to operate as needed during an important business trip outside the contiguous United States. This issue threatened to seriously disrupt an important presentation for our director's counterparts from other U.S. institutions, high-level foreign representatives and leadership. This would have resulted in a critical loss of face to our institution had Jaron Leavitt not responded in a timely manner. He tracked down the issue and everything was operational again with time to spare. We sincerely appreciate his expertise, patience, and professionalism. Wayne Hunt, Team Cleaning Specialist | Facilities

Kudos to Wayne Hunt, Team Cleaning Specialist, who help me clear a downed tree across Campus Drive last Sunday early morning. This event occurred on Sunday morning, 1:30 a.m. I was called in by the Steam Plant, arrived at the scene and stared at the mess for a few minutes. Wayne and a security guard were there as well. Wayne was on his way to his next building when he stopped to check out the situation. I think he noticed the large amount of work needed and offered to help move the limbs out of the street, as I bucked them up. We worked as a team, and the street clearance when quickly and smoothly, much to the credit of Wayne. David Rauk, Horticulturist, Landscape and Exterior Services, Facilities

We ran into some problems with the new machine, which we won't go into here, but the VandalStore computer staff really came through for us, and made sure we got the best outcome form a difficult situation; even though our problem occurred during one of their busy times of the year. Once again, thank you to the VandalStore computer staff (Shelby Silflow, Sean Instani, Justin Bronstrom, Caleb Parker & Julie Bollman). —Sincerely, Kathy and Peter Haworth

Matthew Proctor, Journeyman Electrician | Facilities

The College of Science is remodeling two rooms for office spaces. Matt’s responsibility is the electrical side of this project. As Matt worked through each layer of electrical issues, he ran across numerous other electrical issues, such as way too many things on one circuit and not enough power from the circuits to support the need for each space. As the electrician, I know I know it is Matt’s job to take care of the issues but, this project had big problems, and two days turned into about 10 days of his time. He disconnected, reconnected, and pulled wires to accommodate the needs of the spaces which was a huge task. He was informed to put electrical outlets on certain walls and after he had done so, he was informed that they were in the wrong place (I was there when he was told to put it on the wall right where he had it). So, without hesitation, he changed it out and put it where the employee wanted it moved to. I would have been really frustrated not only by the amount of days it took to get the so called two-day project done but the change up from incorrect directions with the electrical outlet location. He stepped up, said no problem, made the change and moved on towards finishing the project. Even with the above issues and the change up due to an employee’s wrong direction, he always came in with a genuine smile and always seemed happy to see us. I commend him on his attitude! —Lorrie R. Williams, Administrative Assistant Sr., College of Science

Lauren Hamilton, Student Alumni Program Coordinator | Alumni Relations

Lauren Hamilton is the type of person you can share your daily problems with, and she will listen, then give sound and encouraging advice. She is the type of person you can be 100% honest with, without worry of disclosure. She is the type of person who will listen to ideas, and then facilitate them. She is the type of person who will lead by example. She is a mentor, an advisor, and most importantly a friend. I have known Lauren for about 2 years now, through various activities as an undergraduate. During these past two years I have worked with Lauren as one of her advisees, as a member of the University of Idaho Homecoming Committee and a member and executive board member of the Student Alumni Relations Board. As the advisor for both the Homecoming Committee and Student Alumni Relations Board, she mentors over 100 students during a given year, each with their own struggles, achievements, and ambitions.

Since my first interactions with Lauren I have always considered her a perfect example of what a leader should be, thoughtful, kindhearted, and a mentor. Now, that I have graduated from the University of Idaho, and now working for the University, I am able to call Lauren a friend, as well as a mentor. Thanks to Lauren’s mentorship, I have been able to gain valuable experiences, such as internships and awards during my undergraduate career, as well as my first post-grad job with the university. Her ability to encourage high standards and efforts in academic, as well as outside of student life is outstanding.

Lauren’s work can be seen at many of the major University of Idaho events, such as Mom’s Weekend, Dad’s Weekend, the Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Admin Law, and the entire Homecoming Week. She is constantly working in the background, mentoring, and working with students to make sure the events are the best they can be. The most recent event Lauren has worked on was the 2015 Mom’s Weekend, along with members of the Student Alumni Relations Board. I am writing this Kudo because Lauren will be leaving the University of Idaho for greater and better things, but I wanted to share the impact she has on her students, and remind her that she will be missed. —Sam Koester, Management Assist, College of Graduate Studies
