Coach Verlin: Arena Will Improve Men’s Recruitment
The proposed Idaho Arena will be a huge recruitment tool for the University of Idaho’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams, said coach Don Verlin. “There’s an old saying in basketball, ‘recruit them while they’re young,’ and with the use of this new facility we’ll be able to generate interest from a host of young athletes that we are currently unable to reach–," he said. "We’ll be able to hold basketball and volleyball camps, and even hold regional tournaments that will bring people from outside of the community inside. It’ s the best thing we could possibly do to recruit new students.”

Utilizing this new space will also grant arena-type-sports the ability to leave the Kibbie Dome and relieve the stress of hosting nearly all of Vandal Athletics in one facility.
“When I think about coaching a sport, I relate it to being a professor in a classroom,” Verlin said. “You want a great teaching environment where students can focus. Right now we don’t have our own facility to practice and play in, which often leads to distractions. Also, as a team, we’re traveling quite frequently and sometimes we might have to leave for earlier flights because of time constraints. Having an arena with a practice gym will allow both men’s and women’s basketball teams to workout in the gym and spend more time in classroom.”
The Idaho Arena will also provide students and fans a dedicated facility to watch their Vandals play. Current games are sometimes at the Cowen Spectrum in the ASUI Kibbie Dome, or sometimes at the Memorial Gym.
“We need to let people know how important it is to have a dedicated sports arena,”Verlin said. “This multi-purpose facility will affect each and every individual at the university in a positive way. We need to rally together and make this happen.”
