Gardening

The University of Idaho Extension’s gardening resources serve Idaho communities.

Plant Clinic

  • 1-4 p.m.
  • Every Thursday starting the first week of May and ending the first week of October.

  • No charge

Payette River Valley Master Gardener volunteers meet at the UI Extension office to identify plants, insects and diseases submitted by local citizens. We offer plant recommendations and integrated pest management strategies. There is no charge for this service and plant and insect samples are accepted anytime.

Volunteer Projects

The UI Extension, Washington County office provides training and support for Master Gardener volunteer projects in Washington, Adams, Payette and Gem counties. With training and support from UI Extension educators, Master Gardeners serve their communities with local horticultural projects and gardener education.

1 of 5: The Payette River Valley Master Gardeners installed the Weiser Community Pond Pollinator Garden in 2014 as a demonstration garden and beautification project for the Weiser community fishing pond. Many of the plants were donated from the yards of our Master Garden volunteers or from seeds planted by our Junior Master Gardener students. We continue to maintain this garden and are always adding new plants and evaluating those that have done well in the planting.

2 of 5: The Vendome is a community events center ran by the city of Weiser and the site of some of our Master Gardener classes. We were asked to help with the plantings and chose a diverse selection of perennials from local sources. Once again our hope is that this acts as a demonstration garden as well as a beautification project.

3 of 5: Love INC is a nationwide movement of local churches. The Weiser affiliate's small volunteer group runs a food bank, community garden and classes for people in need. Payette River Master Gardeners, Washington County Juvenile Probation, Weiser FFA chapter, local 4-H groups and the Love INC volunteers join to plant, maintain and harvest the garden. All produce is given to the food bank or to juvenile probation volunteers.

4 of 5: The Payette River Valley Master Gardeners sponsor a booth at the Weiser Farmers market. At the booth we answer plant, pest and disease questions as an addition to our weekly plant clinics. We also provide garden or food related free kids activities.

5 of 5: Idaho Master Gardener volunteers pass on their knowledge by teaching youth the basics of gardening through the Junior Master Gardener program. Programs have been conducted in Weiser, Payette and New Plymouth for children ages 7-14. Youth are taught about water, soil, plant propagation, landscape design, botany, entomology and the value of community service.
