Contests and Events
Local teams of parents, instructors, UI Extension personnel and interested community members are encouraged to work collaboratively in planning, advertising and hosting club, county and regional contests/events. These experiences let youth demonstrate their skills, interact with peers and have fun. See the Idaho 4-H Shooting Sports Rules (PDF) for specific event details.
Local & Regional Contests
Providing opportunities for 4-H members to engage in properly supervised local and regional contests frequently gives youth an incentive to practice while building their competencies related to the safe and appropriate use of firearms/equipment. These events also enable youth to build positive relationships with peers, develop personal accountability and model ethical behavior/sportsmanship.
If your county is planning a shooting sports contest or activity, please share basic information and registration materials with the State 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator for posting.
State Contests
State contests are offered in designated disciplines for youth ages 8 to 18. These also serve as qualifying events for eligible Idaho youth (ages 14-18) to advance to the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. State contests incorporate at least two of the three discipline events youth will encounter at the national level. Consult Idaho's 4-H Shooting Sports Rules (PDF) for specific details.
The 2024 4-H State Shooting Contests will be held June 7-8 in the eastern district. Please see the cover letter document for specific discipline locations. For 2024, the discipline events at the State 4-H Shooting Sports Contest include:

- Pistol — Air
- Pistol — Smallbore
- Rifle — Air
- Rifle — Smallbore

National Contests
