Ali Carr-Chellman

Ali Carr-Chellman serves as dean of the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences and a professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Idaho. She is responsible for the leadership, vision, strategy, budget, personnel and all academic issues within the college, which sits at the nexus of the most important issues to Idahoans today — health and education.

Carr-Chellman comes from a family of teachers. Her grandmother, mother and sisters were all public school teachers, and her father was on the faculty at The Ohio State University Medical School.

After working as a teacher, she learned about instructional design and pursued a different educational career pathway — creating learning solutions for jet fighter pilots, business professors, pharmacists and online courses across many subjects.

Carr-Chellman brought 30 years of experience in higher education to U of I when she joined the university in 2016. She has Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Syracuse University and a doctorate from Indiana University, Bloomington. She is the author of more than 200 publications and six books focused on systems theory, diffusion of innovations, online learning, gaming and gender, how to change schools for the better and how to engage learners. Her TED talk on the topic of boys and educational gaming has been viewed more than 1 million times. She has won several academic awards, including the Jonassen Award for Outstanding Research this year by the Association for Educational Communications Technology.

The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences has a large portfolio of degrees including Recreation, Sport, Tourism, Dance (boasting the only Dance Bachelor of Science in Idaho), Teacher Preparation (at the elementary and secondary levels), Exercise, Sport, Health Sciences, Athletic Training, Rehabilitation, Principal and Superintendent Preparation, and Adult, Organizational Learning and Leadership. The college, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020, changes lives every day by serving education and health needs across Idaho. Carr-Chellman believes students in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences change the world in humble, unseen, but life-altering ways and have fantastic opportunities to enrich the state of Idaho.
