“Protein medications offer some of our best treatments for many debilitating or life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Protein medications may be improved by modifying them with specific chemical groups. By applying o-aminoanilide technology, I hope to create aspartyl thioester precursors that can be used as simple sites for protein modification.
Since joining the program, I have learned quite a bit about the future of medicine, and have used this experience to come up with the original idea for my new project. When complete, it will be my largest personal accomplishment.
My participation in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program has taught me that even as a young college student in Idaho, I can make a difference in the world by dedicating myself to a grand challenge. Hopefully, through this project, I will realize this by contributing a small but not insignificant piece to the challenge of engineering better medicines.”
During this research project, I will gain plenty of hands-on experience and learn many technical skills. I expect to learn chromatography skills, synthetic chemistry, skills, mass spectrometry skills, and much more.
This project overlaps with science in multiple aspects. I have been told engineering can be defined as an application of scientific principles. During the course of this project, I will rely heavily on several scientific principles. The most notable of these will be the principles behind synthetic chemistry and protein biology.
The original idea for this project was my own. I believe that the entirety of this project will be my largest innovation and innovative experience.
New advances in medicine impact people across the world. In the process of completing this project, I will learn about the challenges engineers and scientists must overcome to design and construct these advances.
The rising cost of healthcare is one of the largest problems facing our society. By participating in the advancement of medicine, I will gain an interesting perspective on this issue that I can draw upon during civil discussion and while voting.
Grand Challenge Focus Area
New medical technologies and methods are needed address these problems and further enhance modern diagnosis and treatment capabilities. The promise of personalizing medicines, advanced ways of using health information, and a better understanding of how our bodies work give hope for a healthier world.
