Engineer Better Medicines

Grand Challenge Pitch

I have always been interested in medicine, and how it can help heal a person that is sick. However, medicine is far from perfect, there are so many developments to be made in the field of medicine. I will be involved in research with the long-term goal of creating a method for the purification of T cells using magnets. With the arrival of gene therapies that involve removing a patient’s T cells then altering and reinjecting them, finding a better way to purify a patient’s T cells will be of large importance.

I have recently worked to create peptides using the novel amino acid aspartyl nitrobenzothiazine. These peptides are currently being tested at Washington State University as models for a new method of creating therapeutic glycoproteins.

I will complete a year-long stock market trading simulation with an emphasis on the biotech industry. At the end of this simulation I will be entering the Barker Trading Competition to test my knowledge.

I will be taking the seminar Tech Startup Entrepreneurship to learn about how to commercialize a medical innovation.

I am very interested in studying abroad. It is important to look at problems from new perspectives and studying abroad may offer me this opportunity and expose me to different medical research.

I will volunteer as a tutor in a basic biology or chemistry class to give back to my community at the university.

Grand Challenge Focus Area

Engineer Better Medicines

Doctors have long known that people differ in susceptibility to disease and response to medicines. But, with little guidance for understanding and adjusting to individual differences, treatments have been standardized rather than individualized.
