Larry Stauffer, Ph.D., P.E.

Larry Stauffer served as Dean of the College of Engineering on the Moscow campus for 10 years, overseeing and establishing priorities for the second largest college at U of I. The College of Engineering is one of the leading engineering programs in the northwest and is one of the university’s oldest and most well-respected colleges with over 11 thousand living alumni. With a history of over 125 years of educating engineering leaders, the College of Engineering is currently composed of six academic departments, five research centers and institutes, a significant distance education program, and employs over 100 faculty and staff across four campus locations in Idaho Falls, Boise, Coeur d’Alene and Moscow.

Stauffer has worked at U of I in several capacities since 1987. He has served as interim dean, senior associate dean, director of the College of Engineering in Boise and throughout has been a professor of mechanical engineering. Before his life in academia he worked as a design engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

Stauffer earned his bachelor and master degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his doctorate from Oregon State University. He is also a licensed professional engineer within the State of Idaho.

In between the business of meeting with alumni, industry partners, faculty, students and staff, Stauffer enjoys the outdoors. He is an avid skier and hunter. Stauffer has three sons, Garrett, a U of I alumnus in electrical and computer engineering working as a hardware engineer at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories; Carson, a U of I alumnus in computer science working as a software developer in Seattle; and Will, a freelance filmmaker and photographer who documents and explores wild places.
