Recognizing Her Father’s Commitment
Being the daughter of the College of Engineering’s longest serving dean, Sheila Janssen-Klages, is no stranger to the hallways of the Janssen Engineering Building. Sheila and her husband Karl W. Klages generously provided support to renovate the entryway of the main engineering complex building named after her father. The entryway that houses a coffee shop (which the Janssen-Klages’ also helped bring to the building) now welcomes visitors, prospective students and their families with a bold design, comfortable furniture and interactive display technology.
“I was in effect raised in the College of Engineering from the age of three months old when my father, Allen S. Janssen, first became an instructor until I graduated from U of I in 1953. My father served as dean from 1946-67, he was forever dedicated to the university and this carried over to our family. My husband Karl and I know that the university meant everything to my father, and we wish to further and honor his dedication by giving to support scholarships and improvements where applicable. I would encourage anyone and everyone to consider the U of I as part of their giving."- Sheila Janssen-Klages '53
