Fritz Fielder's research interests are in the broad area of measurements and modeling of hydrologic and environmental systems. Fiedler has worked on a variety of projects, including developing subsurface hydrocarbon measurement techniques, analyzing the effects of tillage and reconsolidation on soil-water retention characteristics, exploring the effects of scale and spatial variability of soil properties on hydrologic response, and developing numerical methods for routing discontinuous surface water flows over infiltrating surfaces.

Fritz Fiedler founded and advises the University of Idaho chapter of Engineers Without Borders, whose focus is on helping rural Bolivian communities develop sustainable water systems using appropriate technology. He has also helped to develop a rainwater harvesting system for an agroforestry project in the Philippines.
