The Internet is Changing (and Ruining) Everything
Franchesca “Chescaleigh” Ramsey
Keynote Talk and Book Signing

Thursday, March 21, 2019
6-7:30 p.m. (Doors open at 5:30 p.m.)
International Ballroom, Bruce M. Pitman Center
University of Idaho

Social media has revolutionized the way we talk about the things that matter most — civil rights, politics, climate change and Beyoncé. But with great power comes great responsibility. And drama. Despite the ease of talking to friends and Russian bots across the globe, it seems social media has made it harder than ever to talk to the people closest to us. Is it possible to block, delete and unfollow everyone we know and love online? Is it worth even trying? In this talk Franchesca Ramsey, actress/comedian and host of MTV's Decoded, shares how a viral video changed her life and the many ways we communicate with each other — from the highs of bridging gaps and making connections to the many pitfalls that accompany talking about race, power, sexuality and gender in an unpredictable public space…the internet.

The event is free and open to all!

About Franchesca

Hailing from New York City, Ramsey is a writer, blogger and actress. Her self-described "claim to fame" happened when her video, titled "Sh*t White Girls Say to Black Girls" went viral and sparked a field day on major news outlets. Since then, she has been interviewed and invited as guest correspondent which she did so regularly on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.

More recently, Ramsey has been hosting her MTV News series Decoded, which discusses race and popular culture. In 2018, she published Well, That Escalated Quickly: Memoirs and Mistakes of an Accidental Activist, a collection of personal essays. She also manages and creates content for her two YouTube channels: the Chescaleigh Comedy Channel which features parody performances, and the Chescalocs Channel where she posts about beauty, haircare and style advice.

Following her keynote, Ramsey will be signing copies of her book, which will be available for purchase on site from BookPeople of Moscow.
