Intro to SI: Students

Want to sharpen your study skills and improve your understanding of difficult course material? SI is here to help!

SI is a voluntary and free academic assistance program that uses casual, peer-led study groups to help students in historically difficult courses.

SI Leaders are current students who excelled in the course to which they are assigned. They attend the lecture along with the students and prepare collaborative sessions that correspond with the material covered in class. SI sessions provide students with an opportunity to not only engage in course material with their peers, but to also acquire valuable study strategies.

Research shows that 1 hour of collaborative, on-task work is more effective than 2 1/2 hours studying alone. SI is a great place to study in a group while the SI Leader helps keep the group on-task. Additionally, students who consistently participate in SI sessions receive, on average, one-half to a whole letter grade higher than students enrolled in the same course who do not attend SI sessions – you can’t afford NOT to come!

“The sessions I attended were very interactive and forced me to apply the content in the class. It really helped cement the material.” –SI Student Participant

Frequently Asked Questions

SI is a series of regularly scheduled, peer-led study sessions for difficult courses. SI sessions focus on using effective study techniques to master difficult course content, so you learn what to learn and how to learn at the same time. SI is free and available to all students enrolled in courses supported by SI.

Students who attend SI regularly:

  • Earn an average of 1/2 to 1 full letter grade higher than those who do not
  • Have a better understanding of course material
  • Develop effective study skills that can be applied to other courses

SI Leaders are U of I students who have taken difficult courses and been successful in them. SI Leaders attend class for the course which they support and provide informal, structured study sessions focused on the most difficult concepts covered in class.
