Preparing for an Advising Meeting
Advising is a critical component to your success here at the University of Idaho. Every student is assigned an academic advisor, and it is important to maintain contact with your advisor throughout the academic year. At a minimum you should be meeting with your academic advisor once a semester prior to registration.
Preparing for your meeting:
The first thing you need to do is schedule your meeting with your advisor. Schedule this meeting in advance (at least two weeks before registration if the advising meeting is for registration purposes). If you do not know who your advisor is you can use the Find Your Advisor tool.
Once you have scheduled your appointment, please prepare for your advising meeting to the best of your ability. If you are meeting to discuss your schedule for an upcoming semester (prior to registration), Schedule Planner is a great tool to get you started! With this tool, you can easily generate a tentative class schedule without having to use pen and paper. All information is saved online, and you can go back and change it as needed. The tentative schedule can be shared with your advisor who will assist in creating an approved, final schedule when the two of you meet.

- This resource allows you to see the courses required for your degree, which ones you have completed, which ones are in progress and the courses you still need to complete.

- This page allows you to see all of the courses offered during a semester. There are often several different sections of a class available to take, so it is important to carefully select the section that fits in your schedule and write down the CRN number.
- When identifying and finding courses to create a semester schedule it is important to investigate any prerequisites required for courses. On the Class Schedule site any course requiring a prerequisite should be identified with an asterisk. For information regarding prerequisite requirements, see the course catalog.
