Hobbies/Extracurricular Activities: I really enjoy reading--anything by Malcolm Gladwell will keep my attention for hours! I also love cooking, especially when the farmers market is up and running through the summer and fall months! Some of my extracurriculars include taking Zumba classes, playing on the UI women's hockey team, and volunteering at the SRCC.

Initial Interest: While growing up my mom was a nurse and I always admired her passion to serve and take care of others. I knew from a young age that I wanted a career that allowed me to do the same, and after taking my first "human biology" course, I realized that understanding the science behind the patient care made it that much more satisfying. After many shadowing experiences and "picking the brain" of multiple PAs, NPs, and physicians, I found that I really enjoy the physician assistant career model and the balance of autonomy and collaboration that it provides.

Experience Highlights: While exploring my interest in the medical field, I have found myself faced with so many exciting projects and opportunities! I have participated in two ABS trips and currently volunteer as a scribe at the Snake River Community Clinic. I have also had the opportunity to be a peer TA for a couple of undergraduate biology courses, and have been a research assistant for one of UI's adjunct professors for two years. Additionally, I had a really amazing internship working at Disney's Animal Kingdom in the endocrinology/reproductive biology laboratory (yes, with animals, but still cool!). Currently, I'm working as a CNA at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center where I am learning so much about patient care and often have the opportunity to shadow and work under some amazing physicians, PAs, and NPs!

Advice for new Pre-Health Students: Consistently be on the watch for interesting opportunities to serve others and learn! I have found so many unique internships, lab/research jobs, and volunteer positions that have allowed me to explore the medical field from all different kinds of angles! Never be afraid to explore an opportunity that is interesting to you, even if it isn't specifically geared towards "pre-meds" (Fun fact: my job working with animals at Disney World is the reason why I got an interview at the "human" hospital.. say what?!).
