Environmental Science Program

The quality of life in tomorrow's world hinges on our ability to understand the world around us and to provide solutions to important environmental issues. These issues are complex because they are about the natural environment and impacts of humans who live in and depend on that environment. You can make a difference in tomorrow’s world by pursuing a degree in Environmental Science, a field with relevance today and into the future.

An Interdisciplinary Education

The University of Idaho Environmental Science Program provides you with a comprehensive education in the hows and whys of environmental problems and ways of solving those problems. Doing so requires integration of many relevant disciplines such as biology, chemistry, ecology, economics, engineering, geography, hydrology, soil science, philosophy, physics, political science, and sociology. This makes the Environmental Science program interdisciplinary.

Who We Are

The UI Environmental Science Program is the oldest and largest interdisciplinary program on campus. Since its inception in 1993, the program has grown to 170 undergraduates and more than 90 graduate students, including M.S. and Ph.D. students. Most of our graduates (>95%) find employment in their field or choose to continue their education. In addition to degree programs in Moscow, the program also offers the B.S. degree UI Centers in Idaho Falls and Coeur d'Alene, and M.S. degrees at a distance using live instruction, video, and the Internet.

The Environmental Science Program initiated the University of Idaho Sustainability Initiative in 2006. This program is changing the curriculum across the campus as well as the way faculty, staff and students are experiencing life on campus. Our students are active in the UI Sustainability Center and they contribute to environmental solutions through volunteering in the Environmental Club, research, and much more.

"This program was a great experience. I loved the freedom to explore different specific disciplines. Without that freedom, I don't know if I would have found the areas I excel in, and the areas I enjoy the most."
